Description
HP AdvanceStack hubs are 10Base-T/Ethernet multiport repeaters that incorporate the advantages of modular solutions while improving on the benefits you have come to expect from stackable hubs. This includes a variety of media options, port configurations, and management options.
Upgradeability
With HP AdvanceStack hubs, you can add advanced functionality, such as SNMP management, security, dial-in/dial-out access, redundant power, and routing, to the entire stack when you need it. An expansion slot in every hub makes upgrading easy by allowing you to add these functions to the stack without having to purchase additional hubs.
Scaleability
The AdvanceStack family offers three hub configurations, so you can choose the right hub for your needs.
  • HP J2600A with 12 UTP ports (RJ-45)
  • HP J2601B with 24 UTP ports (2 50-pin Telco connectors--RJ-45 adapters included)
  • HP J2602B with 48 UTP ports (4 50-pin Telco connectors--RJ-45 adapters included)
Redundant power supply
Up to four HP AdvanceStack 24- and 48-port hubs can be connected to an external redundant power supply (HP J2962A, available December 1995) to ensure constant power, for maximum networking uptime.
Manageability
Up to 16 hubs (784 nodes) in a stack can be managed by either out-of-band or in-band tools provided by HP. The hubs can be connected together with industry-standard UTP cables through the hubs' RJ-45 In/Out extension ports to create a distributed management chain that can extend up to 185 meters end to end. Management access to the hubs in the chain is obtained through the RS-232 console port on any of the hubs (out-of-band management), or through an Ethernet SNMP Module installed in any of the hubs in the stack (SNMP-based in-band management).
Basic out-of-band management
HP AdvanceStack hubs offer built-in management features, including Windows-based management software (HP Stack Manager), built-in distributed management ports, and a serial cable to attach a PC to the hub's RS-232 port. These provide you with an out-of-band management solution for the basic processes of configuring, monitoring, and diagnosing the hubs. These features are available even without a management module being installed in any of the hubs in the chain, but the out-of-band management features are enhanced for each hub that has an SNMP module installed.
SNMP management
As the size and complexity of your network grow, HP provides complementary management products to extend your span of control. With an HP Ethernet SNMP Module (HP J2603B) installed in one of the hubs in the stack, the entire stack of hubs can be managed in-band from an SNMP management station on the network. Use the Ethernet SNMP Module(s) and the distributed management ports in your AdvanceStack hub stack along with HP OpenView Interconnect Manager products on Microsoft (R) Windows and UNIX (R) for centralized SNMP management of multivendor, multiprotocol networks.
Advanced management
Along with the instrumentation built into the Ethernet SNMP Module, the HP EASE (Embedded Advanced Sampling Environment) applications provide AdvanceStack hubs with intelligent network traffic monitoring, performance optimization, and trend analysis capability.
Standard features
  • Includes LEDs for power, fault, expansion slot, console, security, transceiver slot, activity, collisions, and per-port status, providing quick hub status checks and troubleshooting assistance.
  • Provides "hot swap" capabilities--you can add or replace any hub in the stack without interrupting the normal operation of the network.
  • Allows access to a redundant power supply, which provides constant power to up to four HP AdvanceStack 24- or 48-port hubs.
  • Includes recessed transceiver slot for highly-reliable connection of optional transceiver module (HP J2607A--twisted-pair, HP J2608A--thin coaxial, or HP J2606A--fiber-optic).
  • Can be powered by an HP J2962A AdvanceStack Redundant Power Supply, which provides power to up to four HP AdvanceStack 24- or 48-port hubs.
  • Offers improved ergonomics, such as cable management and back-lit LED panel.
  • Mounts in a standard 19-inch rack, on a wall (flat or on end), or on any horizontal surface. All mounting hardware is included.
Advanced features
  • Provides the capability to configure a redundant link for critical network connections between hubs. Any hub port can be configured as a primary or backup link. The backup link is automatically activated in the event of primary link failure.
  • Includes Intel i960 RISC-based processor, 1 MB RAM, and 256 KB flash EEPROM to provide ample processing power and memory capacity for future network management needs.
  • Provides complete workgroup security features: intruder prevention, auto port disabling, network management alarm, eavesdrop prevention, authorized managers list, and password protection.
  • Allows redundant SNMP management module capabilities: When a second HP AdvanceStack Ethernet SNMP Module (HP J2603B) is installed in the stack, it provides SNMP support for the entire stack in the unlikely event that the primary management module fails.
  • Detects and reports duplicate IP address conditions.
  • Offers a backup management link through the out-of-band management port to insure communication with your HP AdvanceStack 10-Base-T Hub chain in the unlikely event that your network is temporarily down.
  • Provides intelligent error monitoring, intelligent segmentation recovery, and auto-segmentation--providing fault isolation and improved network integrity beyond standard 10Base-T specifications for ports experiencing collision problems.
  • Supports SNMP/IP and IPX multivendor management with HP OpenView Interconnect Manager/Windows and SNMP/IP management with HP OpenView Interconnect Manager/ UX. It is also manageable from any management station with a standard SNMP MIB Browser.
