HP Deskjet 450 Series Printer - README File

This document contains late breaking notes, troubleshooting tips, and other useful information that may not be available in any other areas of the software or the documentation.

Installation

Installation program does not run on Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit edition

Windows XP 64-bit edition is not supported.

Setup.exe program aborted abnormally without any errors

This could happen if the system’s temporary folder, C:\TEMP, is set to write-protected in some operating systems. As a result, the installer is unable to copy files into it. Remove the read-only attribute from the temporary folder and run the setup program again.
This could also happen if the name of the system’s temporary folder contains non-English characters. In this case, create a folder named TEMP in the C:\ drive and run the setup program again.

System prompts for missing files during Plug-and-Play installation

To continue the installation, browse to the Starter CD’s Drivers\PCL3\Win9x_Me\<Language> folder, where <Language> represents the language of the driver being installed.

System prompts for missing files during installation (Windows 98)

If the SETUP.EXE program is run and USB connection is selected before connecting the printer, Windows 98 may prompt for files during the installation.
This usually occurs if after installing the printer, another Plug-and-Play device is installed or a Windows component is added without restarting the system.
If the dialog box that prompts for the files is still open, browse to either C:\Windows\System or the Starter CD’s \Drivers\PCL3\Win9x_Me\<Language> folder, where <Language> represents the language of the driver being installed. If the installation has been canceled, run SETUP.EXE again and browse to one of the locations mentioned above when prompted.

Installing a second printer to the same USB port (Windows 98)

Running the installer to install another printer icon via the USB port removes the existing printer installed on the USB or DOT4 port.
To install a second printer icon that points to the same USB port, do the following:
  1. Open the printer Properties dialog box. To open the dialog box, do the following:
    1. Click Start, Settings, and then Printers.
    2. Right-click the printer icon, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Ports tab to check the port that the printer is currently installed on.
  3. Click Add Printer in the Printers folder.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select Local Printer and click Next.
  6. Select the port that the printer is currently installed on, and then click Next.
  7. Click the Have Disk button.
  8. Browse to the Drivers\Pcl3\Win9x_Me\<LANGUAGE> directory and click OK.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

No printer icon is created at the end of installation (Windows 98, 2000, and XP)

If the printer is connected via a parallel cable, do the following:
  1. Make sure the printer is connected to the PC.
  2. Restart the system with the printer turned on.
In Windows 2000/XP, the following option is also available:
  1. Go to the Printers folder and double-click the Add Printer icon.
  2. Click Next to continue and select Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.
If the printer is connected via a USB cable:
Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the PC.
If the OS still cannot detect the printer, run the Scrubber utility located on the Starter CD’s Utils\Scrubber folder and re-install the driver.
note:
Scrubber is a utility that cleans up the registry. Double-click to run it; the mouse pointer will change to the busy state (such as an hourglass). After the utility completes, the mouse pointer will change back to an arrow.

Known issue with other printer drivers

If the parallel port is being shared between the printer and a workgroup LaserJet printer that is shipped with the Resource Manager, there could be some conflicts.
To resolve this, do the following workarounds:
  1. Uninstall the current printer driver. The HP LaserJet printer should work after this.
  2. Reinstall the printer using the Add Printer Wizard instead of running the SETUP.EXE program.
-OR-
  1. Connect the printer via the USB port instead of the parallel port.
  2. If compatibility issues are encountered with other printer drivers, install the printer driver via the Add Printer Wizard instead of running the SETUP.EXE program. Note that the Toolbox will not be available when installing the driver using this method.

Printer may be installed on different ports (LPT, USB, or DOT4) depending on method of installation and operating system

The following table shows the type of port that the printer will be installed on, based on the method of installation, type of connection and operating system used.

Uninstallation

Uninstaller was unable to remove the printer from the system

This occurs if a print job was sent to the printer before uninstalling the driver. As the driver has not been unloaded from the system, the uninstaller is unable to delete the driver files.
Restart the system and run the Uninstaller again. If it still fails, run the Scrubber utility located on the Starter CD’s Utils\Scrubber folder. This utility is available for Window 98/Me and Windows 2000/XP only.
note:
Scrubber is a utility that cleans up the registry. Double-click to run it; the mouse pointer will change to the busy state (such as an hourglass). After the utility completes, the mouse pointer will change back to an arrow.

Files are not removed during uninstallation (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000/XP)

In Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000/XP, the uninstaller does not remove files from the \2 or \3 directories, for example c:\winnt\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2.
For Windows 2000/XP, do the following:
  1. Restart the system.
  2. Run the Scrubber utility.
-OR-
  1. Open the Printers folder.
  2. From the File menu, select Server Properties.
  3. In the Server Properties dialog box, click the Drivers tab.
  4. Remove the printer driver from the list of drivers.
For Windows NT 4.0, do the following:
Remove all remaining files whose names start with ‘hpwa’ from C:\Winnt\System32\Spool\Drivers\w32x86\2 and C:\Winnt\System32\Spool\Drivers\w32x86 manually.

Application and driver issues

Windows NT 4.0 driver requirement

Windows NT 4.0 driver requires Service Pack 4 and above for proper functionality. To download a service pack, please go to Microsoft’s Web site (www.microsoft.com).

Printing Microsoft Office documents in two-sided mode

To print any documents created by Microsoft Office applications (for example, Microsoft Word) in two-sided mode, make sure that the page orientation setting in the application matches that in the printer’s Properties dialog box. This will ensure that the document will be printed in the correct orientation and binding order, for example, horizontal flipping for Book option or vertical flipping for Tablet option.

Unable to spool print job

The hard disk may be running out of free disk space for spooling. Free up some disk space from the TEMP directory or Recycle Bin and try printing again.

Problem printing with high-resolution and large scaling settings

Problems may be encountered such as insufficient disk space or a blank printout when high-resolution printing (using settings such as 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi or 1200 dpi) is performed and printouts are scaled to greater than 248% (using HP Zoomsmart). Select PhotoREt instead to allow the driver to automatically adjust to the best combination of print speed and quality.

Problem printing in Acrobat(R) Reader version 5.0 or later

If slow or incomplete printing is encountered, enable low memory mode in the printer driver to reduce the amount of system resources that will be used for printing. Another option is to uninstall the version of Acrobat Reader and install version 4.05b from the Starter CD.
To enable low memory mode in the printer driver, do the following:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers (Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, and 2000), or Printers and Faxes (Windows XP).
  2. Right-click the icon of the printer, and then click:
    • Printing Preferences (Windows 2000 and XP)
    • Properties (Windows 98 and Me)
    • Document Defaults (Windows NT 4.0).
  3. Click the Color tab.
  4. Ensure that the Low Memory Mode check box is selected, and then click OK.

Problem printing in Corel PrintHouse or PhotoHouse

If scaling or offset problems are encountered in the printout, set the desired settings in the printer’s properties dialog box before printing again. Do the following:
  1. Close the application that is currently running.
  2. Open the printer’s properties dialog box by doing the following:
      • Properties (Windows 98 and Me)
      • Document Defaults (Windows NT 4.0)
  3. Set the desired settings.
  4. Run the application and try to print.

Other issues

Do not remove or change print cartridges while printing

If print cartridges are removed while printing, incorrect printouts will result. Replace print cartridges only when a print job has completed.

Failure to recognize printer after reconnecting USB cable in Windows 98

After installing the printer via USB to a Windows 98 system, if the USB cable is disconnected from the system and reconnected later, the system may not recognize the printer unless the system is restarted.
This problem is caused by the Mass Storage Device Class (MSDC) driver.
To resolve the problem, do the following:
  1. Remove the MSDC device using the Device Manager. Do the following:
    1. Right-click My Computer on the computer desktop and select Properties.
    2. Click the Hardware tab.
    3. Click the Device Manager button.
    4. Click Disk Drives.
    5. Locate the HP Deskjet 450 (DOT4STORE) driver and right-click the driver.
    6. Select Uninstall and click OK.
  2. Delete HPZIST12.INF and HPZIST12.PNF from the <Windows>\Inf folder, where <Windows> is the Windows folder.
  3. Reconnect the USB cable.
  4. When the Add New Hardware Wizard for the printer’s storage device appears, do the following:
    1. Click Next.
    2. Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) and click Next.
    3. Ensure all the check boxes are cleared, and click Next.
    4. Click Next to indicate not to install a driver.

Mass Storage Device Class (MSDC) driver not available for parallel connection

Switch to USB connection. The system will automatically detect and install the MSDC driver to access the CompactFlash card inserted in the printer.
The Toolbox provides status and warning information about the printer via bidirectional communication. Bidirectional communication is not supported.

Blank test page printed in single-cartridge printing mode

If a test page is printed (such as the diagnostic page or configuration page) in the single-cartridge printing mode, where only the tri-color cartridge is installed in the printer, a blank page will be printed. This is because test pages are printed using the black or photo print cartridge.

Media ease of use

Photo paper printing options not available for some photo quality papers

Photo Paper Printing options are not available for the following paper types:
  • HP everyday photo paper, matte finish
  • HP everyday photo paper, semi gloss
To enable Photo Paper Printing options, select HP photo paper from the Paper Type list when printing on the paper types mentioned above.

Printing smaller-sized media using the card slot

Use the card slot for smaller-sized media such as the following:
  • Index card 4 x 6 inches
  • Photo (with tab) 4 x 6 inches
  • Photo (with tab) 102 x 152 mm
  • Hagaki card 200 x 148 mm
  • Hagaki card 100 x 148 mm
To use the card slot, do the following:
  1. Remove all media from the input tray.
  2. Flip down the card slot.
  3. Insert the media print side up into the card slot. Ensure that the right edge of the media is properly aligned against the right edge of the slot. Adjust the paper guide on the slot until it fits snugly against the left edge of the media.
