HP Deskjet 1220C Professional Series Printers - USB Install in Windows XP

Introduction
An HP written Add Printer or Lite printer driver for Microsoft(R) Windows XP is available for download from the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com. The Add Printer driver does not have an installer shell, bidirectional communication, a program group, or any desktop shortcut icons. To ensure a successful installation, be sure that the following conditions have been met before beginning installation of the printer driver software:
  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are installed, paper is loaded in the printer, and the printer is turned on and ready to print.
  • Make sure the interface cable is not connected to the computer.
      note:
    Do not install the printer software during the installation of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Downloading the printer driver and extracting the printer driver files
Instructions are provided below for downloading the printer driver:
  1. Right-click Start on the taskbar and select Explore.
  2. Select the C: drive under All Folders, and then select File, New, and Folder. Type DJ1220C and press ENTER. The Dj1220C folder should now appear in the right side of the Windows Explorer window.
  3. Navigate to the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com to the Dj1220C driver download page. Select the language and operating system to be downloaded.
  4. On the Drivers and Downloads Web page, click the link of the desired printer driver.
  5. Click Download Now.
  6. Select the Save this program to disk option in the File Download window and click OK.
  7. When prompted for the save location, ensure that the C:\DJ1220c directory is selected. Note the name of the file being downloaded.
  8. Right-click Start on the taskbar and select Explore.
  9. Select the C:\DJ1220C folder. Double-click the filename of the downloaded driver to extract the driver files. The extraction process will start automatically and a new window will appear.
  10. In the new window, click Tools, Folder Options, and then View. Make sure there is a check mark in the Display the full path in the address bar box. Right-click the address and then select Copy.
Installing the printer driver for a USB connection
  1. After the driver is downloaded, close all unnecessary programs that are running on the computer by following the instructions below:
    1. Right-click any program appearing on the taskbar next to the Start button, and select Close.
    2. Repeat the step above until all the programs appearing in the taskbar are closed.
    3. On the keyboard, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE, and select Task Manager.
    4. Select the Applications tab and End Task on each item listed.
  2. Plug the interface cable from the printer into the computer.
  3. A Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box will appear, click Close.
  4. Click Start, Settings, Printers and Faxes.
  5. If an HP Deskjet 1220C mini driver is present, right-click the printer icon and select Delete.
  6. Double-click Add a printer.
  7. On the Welcome to the Add printer Wizard screen, click Next.
  8. Select Local printer and uncheck Automatically detect my plug and play driver.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Select the USB001 virtual printer port.
  11. Select Next.
  12. Click Have Disk.
  13. Select Browse, right-click in the browse location and paste the address to the extracted files and click Ok.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Select Yes for Default printer and click Next again.
  16. Click Finish to copy the files and create an icon in the Printers folder.
