HP 2000C Professional Series Printer - Colors Fade Out While Printing

Issue:
After inserting a printhead, only a few pages will print correctly. Subsequent pages contain faded-looking output (containing white lines or incorrect colors). After fading, the color stops printing completely. Letting the printer sit for a couple minutes may allow another partial page to print, but, then, the pages fade out again.
Solution
If the black ink is fading out, and air can be seen in its feed tube, the printer must be returned to HP to purge the air from the Ink Delivery System (IDS).
If the cyan, magenta, or yellow ink is fading, a utility program (PSAG1.EXE) is available from ftp.hp.com that will purge air from the IDS.
To use the utility program, run the PSAG1.EXE file, and select Print from the File menu. The program will print 10 pages of dense color. The air purge utility will use approximately 1 cc of ink from each ink cartridge (except black).
Click here to download PSAG1.EXE, the air purging utility, at ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/psag1.exe. After starting the utility, follow the instructions on the screen to purge air from the ink tubes.
  note:
The air purge utility will use approximately 1 cc of ink from each ink cartridge (except black). If all the air is not purged from the tubes after the first run of the utility, run it a second time. If the tubes still contain pockets of air, the printer may need to be returned to HP to purge the air from the ink tubes.
Instead of downloading the PSAG1.EXE utility, it is possible to create and print files in Paint to purge air from the ink tubes. Follow the steps below to create and print the files:
  1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, and Paint.
  2. Click Image and Attributes.
  3. In the Attributes window, select Inches, and type, 5.8, in the Width box and 8 in the Height box. Make sure Colors is selected under Colors, and click OK.
  4. Click the Paint Bucket tool.
  5. Click Cyan in the color palette in the bottom left corner of Paint.
  6. Click the Paint Bucket tool in the center of the work area, and the screen will fill with color.
  7. Click File then Print. Select 5copies, and click OK.
  8. Click File then New.
  9. Click Magenta in the color palette in the bottom left corner of Paint.
  10. Click the Paint Bucket tool in the center of the work area, and the screen will fill with color.
  11. Click File then Print. Select 5Copies, and click OK.
  12. Click File then New.
  13. Click Yellow in the color palette in the bottom left corner of Paint.
  14. Click the Paint Bucket tool in the center of the work area, and the screen will fill with color.
  15. Click File and Print. Select 5Copies, and click OK.
Cause
The IDS of the HP 2000C series printer can run too hot and slow down if excess air has accumulated in the IDS. Eventually, this situation can lead to printhead failures. The IDS is designed to last the life of the printer without building up enough excess air in the system to cause printhead problems. However, when the usage of color ink is very light, excess air can build up over time due to diffusion of air into the tubes. If less than 10 color pages printed per week, run the PSAG1.EXE utility as preventative maintenance. At most, preventive maintenance should only be run once during the life of an individual printer.
