HP Printers - Install and Use the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS, iPadOS)

This document is for HP printers and Android, Apple iOS, and iPadOS smartphones and tablets.

Use HP Smart for mobile devices to print, copy, scan, troubleshoot printer issues, and set up a printer on a wireless network.

An HP account might be required to use some HP Smart features. If you do not have an account, you can create one during the software installation process.

note:
This document is for the HP Smart app on Android, iOS, and iPadOS mobile devices. If you are using a Windows 10 computer or a Mac, go to Install and Use the HP Smart App (Windows 10) or Install and Use the HP Smart App (Mac).

Step 1: View an overview video

Step 2: Install the HP Smart app and set up the printer

Install the HP Smart app on a mobile device running Android OS 7.0 (Nougat) or later, Apple iOS 12.0 or later, or iPadOS.

Go to 123.hp.com from a browser on your phone or tablet and install the HP Smart app.
Make sure your mobile device is connected to your wireless network, with Bluetooth enabled, and then open the HP Smart app.

Privacy and data collection statements display.
Click one of the following options, depending on your requirement:
- Set Up a New Printer: Set up a new printer or connect to a printer that has already been set up.
- Sign in: Create an HP account or sign in to your HP account to use HP Smart features. If prompted for account verification, follow the on-screen steps to find the verification code.
- Skip for now: Go to the Home screen of the HP Smart app.
Allow Bluetooth and location permissions, if prompted.

On the home screen:
- If your printer displays, continue to the next step.
- If your printer displays with Set Up, tap the printer, follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up your printer, and then continue to the next step.
- If your printer does not display, tap Add Printer to select a printer from the list of found printers or set up a new one, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

note:
Restrictions in Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later might prevent Wi-Fi printer setup using the HP Smart app for Android. If the wireless printer setup is not successful, go to 123.hp.com from a Windows or Mac computer or an iOS or iPadOS device to set up the wireless connection using the guided HP installation. You can also connect the printer with the wireless setup wizard on the control panel or use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). Once connected to Wi-Fi, HP Smart can discover the printer to enable printing. Go to Printer Setup Fails with HP Smart App (Android) for detailed steps.

Step 3: Print, scan, and copy

Use HP Smart to copy, scan, and print in a variety of ways. You might need to sign in to your HP account to use some HP Smart features.

Print a document or photo

Use HP Smart to print from your phone or tablet.

Tap a Print tile to print from your device, social media account, or cloud storage, or tap the relevant icons at the bottom of the screen.
If printing from an online account, follow any on-screen prompts to sign in.
Find a photo or document.
note:
The following file types are supported.
- Android devices: Photos (JPEG, PNG) and PDF documents.
- Apple iOS or iPadOS devices: Photos (JPEG, PNG), PDF and Microsoft Office Suite documents (doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx), text (TXT) files, and saved webpages.
Tap Print or the Printer icon .

Scan using your printer

Scan items using your printer, and then save, print, or share them via email.

Place the item you want to scan on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (ADF) tray.
Tap the Printer Scan tile.
Tap the Settings icon to select the input source, color or black and white, and resolution.
Tap Scan.
For multi-page scans, tap the Add Pages icon , and then repeat these steps with another item.

Scan using your mobile device camera

Scan items using your printer or mobile device camera, and then save, print, or share them via email.

note:
Scanning with your mobile device camera requires a minimum of 5 megapixels and auto-focus capability.

Scan with Android

Use your mobile device to scan documents or photos.

Tap the Camera Scan tile or the Camera icon .
Place a document or photo as flat as possible on a solid, contrasting surface. For example, place a light-colored document on a dark surface, or a dark-colored photo on a light surface.
Select Auto or Manual mode, and then complete your scan.
- Auto mode: Hold your device steady over the item you want to scan. Once a document or photo is automatically scanned, quickly move the camera over your next item, or tap the Right arrow to end the scan job.
- Manual mode: Hold your device steady over the item you want to scan, and then tap the Capture icon to scan the item. When the print preview screen displays, tap the Add Pages icon to add additional pages to the scan job.
Print your scan, and send it as an email attachment, or save it to your device or cloud account.

Scan with iOS or iPadOS

Use your mobile device to scan documents or photos.

Tap the Camera Scan tile or the Scan icon .
Place a document or photo as flat as possible on a solid, contrasting surface. For example, place a light-colored document on a dark surface, or a dark-colored photo on a light surface.
Select Auto or Manual mode, and then complete your scan.
- Auto mode: Hold your device steady over the item you want to scan. Once a document or photo is automatically scanned, quickly move the camera over your next item, or tap the round page count icon in the top right corner of the app screen to end the scan job.

- Manual mode: Hold your device steady over the item you want to scan, and then tap the Capture icon to scan the item. When the print preview screen displays, tap the Add Pages icon to add additional pages to the scan job.
Print your scan, send it as an email attachment, or save it to your device or cloud account.

Copy documents, cards, and photos

Make copies of items captured with your mobile device camera.

note:
The Copy feature is designed to quickly complete a direct print job. If you want to save or share a copy instead of printing it, see the previous section to Scan using your printer.

Tap the Copy tile. If you do not see the Copy tile on the app home screen, tap the Personalize tile or button, scroll down the screen, and then select Copy.
Place the item you want to copy as flat as possible on a solid, contrasting surface. For example, place a light-colored document on a dark surface, and a dark-colored photo on a light surface.
Tap the object size button to set the size of the original item.
Tap the Flash icon to set the flash mode.
Select Auto or Manual mode, and then complete your copy.
- In Auto mode, hold your device over the item you want to copy. Hold the camera still for best performance.
  - Android: Once a document or photo is automatically scanned, quickly move the camera over your next item, or tap the Right arrow to end the copy job.
  - iOS or iPadOS: Once a document or photo is automatically scanned, quickly move the camera over your next item, or tap the round page count icon in the top right corner of the app screen to end the copy job.

- In Manual mode, center the area you want to copy on the screen, and then tap the Capture icon to copy the item. When the print preview screen displays, tap the Add Pages icon to add additional pages to the copy job.
To print the copy job, tap Start Black or Start Color.

Step 4: Manage printer preferences, messages, and supplies

From the printer settings page, you can manage printer settings, view messages, and order supplies.

note:
Settings locations vary by mobile device.

View and Manage Printer: Tap your printer icon to open the printer settings page. You can view printer status, manage remote printing if it is available, change printer preference, print printer reports, view network information, and more.

note:
Printer information, reports, and tools vary by printer.
View messages: Tap the Notification icon (Android) or the printer icon (iOS, iPadOS) to view error messages. To view print activity, Mobile Fax, Smart Tasks activity, and find special offers, tap the Notification icon .
Order supplies: Tap the Supplies tile to order supplies and manage your HP Instant Ink account.

Step 5: Learn about additional features

Explore additional features of the HP Smart app.

Print Anywhere: Use your mobile device to send print jobs over the internet when you are away from your printer. You can give access to your printer remotely, this option is available on select HP printers. Go to Print Anywhere with the HP Smart App for more information.
Smart Tasks: Create shortcuts for printing, emailing, or saving files from the HP Smart app. Go to Using Smart Tasks for more information.
Mobile Fax: Send faxes from your mobile device to a fax machine or fax-capable printer. Go to Sending Faxes with the HP Smart app for more information.
Printables: Access free printable content for children, such as learning worksheets, coloring pages, puzzles, and reading material.

Account: Access your HP Account home page where you can manage HP Account, add your printers, and manage HP benefits.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Review these frequently asked questions about the HP Smart app.

Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use the HP Smart app features?

An HP account permits access to print and scan from the HP Smart app, and the premium features, such as Mobile Fax, Smart Task Shortcuts. You can also manage your printer remotely, share access to your printer, and print from anywhere with a compatible printer.

What if my printer is not found during setup?

Check for network issues and conditions that can cause printer setup with the HP Smart app to fail.

Confirm the printer is not in energy saving or sleep mode: Press a button on the printer or touch the printer control panel to return it to its normal power state.
Confirm the printer connection and network name: On your printer, make sure the wireless feature is on, and the printer is connected to the same network as your mobile device.

Some printers have a Wireless icon and a blue light on the printer control panel. Make sure this light is on and not blinking.
Turn on Bluetooth on your mobile device: Go to wireless settings on your mobile device, and make sure Bluetooth is on or enabled.

note:
Bluetooth is used with some printers only during setup, and not for printing.
Grant location access permission to HP Smart app: The HP Smart app uses the location to get the name of the network to which your mobile device is connected, a list of other available wireless networks, and to discover nearby Bluetooth devices for printer setup.
Turn off or move nearby devices: Other wireless printers and devices that emit radio signals, such as microwaves and cordless telephones, can interfere with setup. Turn them off or move them farther away from your printer.
Check the router band setting: Many routers can operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequency bands, but not all HP printers support both bands. Make sure the 2.4 GHz router band is enabled and broadcasting. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band SSID.
Restart the printer and the mobile device: Restarting the printer and mobile device can clear possible error conditions.
Restart the router: If you are experiencing a slow or intermittent wireless connection, try restarting your router. Consult your router manufacturer, Internet service provider, or network administrator for instructions on how to restart the router.
Move the printer and router closer together: Move the printer closer to your wireless router, but no closer than 6 ft (1.8 m). Wireless signals can be weaker at greater distances between the printer and the router.
Check for a Smart network switch or Switch to Mobile Data (Samsung devices): Make sure the Smart network switch option is off in the Wi-Fi settings menu.

note:
Not all Samsung devices have a Smart network switch option.
Turn off cellular data (Android OS 7 and later devices): Temporarily turn off cellular data during printer setup.
Reset after changing your router: Go to No Connection after Router or Wi-Fi Settings Change.

Why can't I log into my HP account from the HP Smart app?

Older versions of the HP Smart app no longer support the login feature. Go to 123.hp.com from a browser on your phone to get the latest version of the app.

If your mobile device version is not compatible with the latest version of the HP Smart app, use a different mobile printing solution:

Android: Printing from Android Smartphones or Tablets
Apple iOS: Printing with Apple AirPrint (iOS)

Why does the HP Smart app need Bluetooth and location permission?

The HP Smart app might require permission to use Bluetooth and location services to set up or add a printer in the app. This requirement is for improved security and as a privacy measure.

The HP Smart app uses Bluetooth to discover your printer and connect it to your wireless network.
The HP Smart app uses location to get the name of the network your mobile device is connected, a list of other available wireless networks, and to discover nearby Bluetooth devices for printer setup.

How do reconnect my printer after I change my router?

Go to No Connection after Router or Wi-Fi Settings Change for information on getting a printer back on a wireless network.

How do I print Facebook photos I am tagged in?

Friends who tag you needs to turn on the Posts on my timeline option in their Facebook account settings. Go to the Facebook Help Center (in English) for more information.

How do I print with the HP Smart app from OneDrive on Apple iOS or iPadOS?

The Print with HP Smart option on the Share menu does not work with OneDrive documents and photos. Use one of the following methods to print from OneDrive with an iOS or iPadOS device.

From a file icon: Tap the Menu icon , tap Open in another app, and then tap Print with HP Smart.

The Preview page displays. Select the printer, change any print setting required, and then tap Print.

Can I personalize my home screen?

Yes. You can add or remove tiles from the home screen. Tap the Personalize tile or button, and then tap the toggle to On or Off on the items you want to add (On) or remove (Off) from the home screen. When you finish, tap the back arrow to return to the home screen or tap Done. Your changes are saved automatically.

Can I change print settings in the app?

Yes. Depending on the file type, you can change print settings such as print quality, paper size, and orientation.

Android

Change print job settings on your Android smartphone or tablet.

On the HP Smart app home screen, tap a Print or Scan tile.
Select or scan the document or photo you want to print.
On the Preview page, tap the icon.
Change print settings, such as Layout, Copies, Color Mode, and Paper Size.
Tap More Options to change settings such as quality, border (photos only), and scale, and then tap the Back button on your mobile device to save the settings and return to the Preview screen.
When you are ready to print, tap the Print icon .

iOS, iPadOS

Change print settings on your iOS or iPadOS device.

On the HP Smart app home screen, tap the Print Document or Print Photo tile.
Select a document or photo you want to print from your mobile device.

The Preview screen displays.
Tap the preview image to edit the document or photo.
Tap Print.

The Print Preview screen displays.
Tap the image to access the Transformation menu where you can resize and rotate the image.
After you resize or rotate the image, tap Done to return to the Print Preview screen.
On the Print Preview screen, slide up the panel that displays the printer name above the print toolbar.

Depending on your printer features, you can set the number of copies, paper size, color option, page range, print quality, and specify the double-sided option.
Tap Print.

How do I check for printer problems?

Use the HP Smart app to check for any issues with your printer and access troubleshooting resources.

Android: Tap the Notification icon on the home screen, and then follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
iOS, iPadOS: Tap the printer icon on the home screen, tap the printer status, and then follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
