Replacing the Printhead for HP Photosmart All-in-One Printer Series (B109)

Introduction

A printhead assembly consists of cartridges fitted into a printhead. If the printhead assembly sustains damage or is incompatible with the product, you might need to replace it. Replacement printhead assemblies are available only from HP Support or authorized service providers.
  1. If you are in Asia Pacific, the site directs you to a service center in your area.
  2. Search for part number CN643A.
  3. Follow the instructions to order the printhead assembly.

Replace the printhead assembly

Follow these steps to replace the printhead assembly.

Wait until a new printhead assembly is available before removing the cartridges. Do not leave the cartridges outside of the product for longer than 30 minutes. Leaving the printhead and cartridges outside the product for long periods can damage the product and the supplies.

Step one: Remove the old cartridges

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Press in the tab on the front of the cartridge to release it, and then remove it from its slot.

  4. Repeat the previous step for each cartridge.

Step two: Remove the old printhead

  1. Lift the latch handle on the carriage until it stops.

Step three: Clean the electrical contacts inside the product

For successful printhead assembly replacement, it is important to get the electrical contacts inside the product as clean as possible. The replacement printhead assembly comes with pre-moistened wipes.

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product before cleaning the electrical contacts.

Use these wipes to clean the electrical contacts inside the product. Wipe from the top to the bottom of the electrical contacts, in one direction only. As the wipes become dirty, discard them and open new ones.

Do not wipe up and down or side to side, as doing so can damage the product.

Step four: Install the new printhead

  1. Remove the new printhead from its package.

    Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts. Do not scratch the electrical contacts on the product or any other surface.

  2. Hold the printhead upright with the colored shape icons on the top.
  3. Lower the printhead into the carriage.

    Make sure that the colored shapes on the sides of the printhead line up with the colored shapes on the carriage.

Step five: Load plain paper

When you install the new cartridges in the next step, the product will print an alignment page. Before proceeding, use the following steps to load plain paper into the product.
  1. Lower the paper tray.
  2. Pull out the tray extension, and then lift up the paper catch.
  3. Load a stack of plain paper into the tray, print side down. Slide the stack of paper forward until it stops.

Step six: Install the new cartridges

Use the following steps to install new cartridges.

Do not reuse the old cartridges. They might damage the new printhead.
  1. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  3. Remove the cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the orange pull tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap.

  4. Twist the orange cap counterclockwise to snap it off.

  5. With the cartridge contacts facing the printhead, slide the cartridge into the empty slot. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks firmly into place.

    Do not lift the latch next to the carriage to install the cartridges. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing issues. The latch must remain down to install the cartridges correctly.

  6. Repeat these steps for each cartridge you replace.
  7. Close the cartridge door. The carriage moves back to the side of the product.

Step seven: Align the product

If the printer alignment does not start automatically, use the following steps to align the printer.
  1. Load letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. Open HP Solution Center:
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    HP Solution Center opens in a new window.
  3. Click Settings ().
  4. Under Print Settings, click Printer Toolbox. The printer Toolbox opens in a new window.
  5. Click the Device Services tab.
  6. Click Align the Printer, and then click OK. The product prints an alignment page.

  7. Load the page print-side down on the right front corner of the glass, and then press OK to scan the page.
    When the Power button stops flashing, the alignment is complete.

Step eight: Return failed parts to HP

If the new printhead assembly came with a post-paid mailing label and instructions to return the failed parts to HP, please do so. HP would like to analyze the parts in order to improve our products in the future.
If the new printhead assembly did not arrive with a post-paid return mailing label, you are done, and there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

The printhead and cartridges depicted might differ slightly from yours, but the steps are the same.
  1. Place the old printhead into the plastic package that the new printhead arrived in.

  2. Peel off the lid sticker labeled B, and then seal the printhead package with it.

  3. Cap the old cartridges with the orange caps that came on the new cartridges.

  4. Put the old parts and the form that came with the new parts into the box that the new parts came in. If possible, also include a printout that shows the issue with the old printhead.

  5. Close the box, apply the post-paid mailing label, and then mail the box.
