HP LaserJet Pro MFP M201 and M202 Printer Series - A 'Cartridge is low' or 'Cartridge is very low' message displays on the computer.

This document applies to the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M201 and M202 printer series.
Sometimes a Cartridge is low or 'Cartridge is very low message displays on your computer and the printer does not print. The message is intended as a warning only so you can have a replacement cartridge available and avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace the cartridge until print quality becomes unacceptable.
You can override the 'Cartridge is very low' message by changing your Supply Settings options in System Setup through the printer control panel.

Solution one: Override the 'Toner Low' message

Follow these steps to change the cartridge Supply Settings through the printer control panel.

Once the HP cartridge reaches Very Low, the HP Premium Protection Warranty ends.
  1. On the printer control panel, press (OK).
  2. Press the Right Arrow button () until you see System Setup, and then press OK.
  3. Press the Right Arrow button () until you see Supply Settings, and then press OK.
  4. Press the Right Arrow button () until you see Black Cartridge, and then press OK.
  5. Press the Right Arrow button () until you see Very Low Setting, and then press OK.
  6. Touch one of the following options, based on your preference.
    • Stop: Sets the printer to stop printing when the cartridge reaches the Very Lowthreshold.
    • Prompt: Sets the printer to stop printing when the cartridge reaches the VeryLow threshold. At that time, you must acknowledge the prompt or replace the cartridge to resume printing.
    • Continue: Sets the printer to display an alert that the cartridge is very low. The printer automatically continues printing beyond the Very Low threshold. This can result inunsatisfactory print quality.

Solution two: Replace the problem cartridge

If you continue to receive this error even after you changed the settings, and the cartridge is not empty, replace the cartridge.
If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to Printer and Page Yield Overview, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
