HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3001-3008 series (Standard) - Setting up the printer without cloud onboarding

Set up the printer and begin printing without connecting to HP Cloud Services (without cloud onboarding).

Supported printers

The instructions in this document apply only to HP LaserJet Pro 3001-3008 series printers (Standard SKU). HP+ models require a connection to the cloud, and you cannot opt out of cloud onboarding.

Set up the printer without cloud onboarding

Follow these steps to set up the printer without cloud onboarding.

  1. Unpack the printer:

    1. Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:

      • A sturdy worksurface in a well-ventilated and dust-free area, and away from direct sunlight

      • Temperature range: 15° - 32.5° C59° to 90.5° F

      • Humidity range: 30% - 70%

    2. Allow sufficient space around the printer to open all doors and trays.

      Note:

      The printer weighs 7.3 kg16.1 lb.

    3. Take the printer out of the box and remove all tape and packing material.

      Note:

      HP recommends recycling the packaging materials.

  2. Load paper into the Tray:

    Load paper into the input tray.

    Note:

    This tray holds up to 250 sheets of 75 grams per square meter20 lb paper.

    2. Press and hold the button on one of the paper-width guides and slide the guides to the edges of the input tray. Do the same for the paper-length guide.

    3. Load paper into the tray.

      Note:

      To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Make sure the top of the stack is below the tray-full indicator.

    4. Verify the paper guides lightly touch the stack or paper, but do not bend it.

    5. Close the input tray.

  3. Connect the power cable and turn on the printer:

    1. Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet.

      Note:

      To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable provided with the printer.

    2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  4. Choose a connection method for printer setup:

    Choose one of the following options to connect your printer.

    For more information about the driver install options, go toHP LaserJet, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise, HP Managed - How to select the correct printer driver.

    • Option one - USB or Ethernet connection:

      Follow these steps to connection your printer with a USB or Ethernet connection.

      Note:

      You do not need to opt-out of HP Cloud Services using either of these methods.

      1. For USB connections, press the Wi-Fi button to turn Wi-Fi off.

      2. Connect the USB or Ethernet cable to the printer and computer or router.

      3. Finish the printer setup on your computer.

        Note:

        If an HP Smart dialog displays on the computer screen prompting you to click for more information, disregard the message and click the x to close the dialog. Users who have bypassed the cloud onboarding are not required to download HP Smart.

        • Windows: Use the Windows built-in drivers to set up your printer. Search for and open Printers & scanners, and then look for your printer name in the list. If it is not in the list, click Add a printer or scanner, and then follow the instructions to add your printer and install the Windows print drivers.

        • macOS: Use Apple's built-in AirPrint drivers to set up the printer. Click the Apple icon , select System Preferences, click Printers & Scanners, and then look for your printer name in the list. If it is not in the list, click the Plus sign , and then follow the instructions, or select the printer and click Add to complete the setup.

      The printer is now configured to begin printing. You do not need to complete any other steps. The remaining steps in this document apply only if you want to set up and connect your printer to a Wi-Fi network.

    • Option two - Wireless (Wi-Fi) connection:

      Choose a method to set up the printer over Wi-Fi without HP Cloud Services.

      • HP Easy Start (recommended), continue to step 5 (Set up the printer on a Wi-Fi connection with HP Easy Start).

      • Alternative Wi-Fi setup method using the embedded web server (EWS), skip to step 6 (Set up the printer on a Wi-Fi connection using the EWS). An Ethernet connection is required to use this method.

  5. Set up the printer on a Wi-Fi connection with HP Easy Start:

    Follow these steps to install HP Easy Start and set up the printer over Wi-Fi without onboarding to HP Cloud Services.

    1. Make sure the Wi-Fi light is blinking, indicating the printer is in setup mode.

      Note:

      For security purposes, printer setup mode turns off after 2 hours.

      • If the Wi-Fi light is blinking, you do not need to do anything. Continue with these steps.

      • If the Wi-Fi light is not blinking and the printer is not set up on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, press the Wi-Fi button to turn it on and restore setup mode, and then continue with these steps.

      • If the Wi-Fi light is not blinking and the printer is set up on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, press and hold the Cancel/Resume and Info buttons at the same time for 5 seconds until the Wi-Fi light starts blinking to restore setup mode, and then continue with these steps.

    2. On your computer, go to hpsmart.com/setup, click Begin Setup, and then click Install HP Easy Start to download the software.

    3. Open HP Easy Start, and then follow these exact steps to opt out of HP Cloud Services.

      1. Follow the HP Easy Start prompts to set up the printer on a Wi-Fi network.

      2. On the Connect printer to Internet screen, click Learn More.

      3. On the Connect printer to internet to get latest updates, click Skip Internet.

    4. Follow any remaining prompts to finish the printer setup.

    The printer is now configured to begin printing. You do not need to complete any other steps.

  6. Set up the printer on a Wi-Fi connection using the EWS:

    Follow these steps to set up the printer on a Wi-Fi connection using the Wireless Setup Wizard in the EWS.

    Important:

    An Ethernet connection is required to access the EWS and complete these steps.

    1. Connect the Ethernet cable to your printer and router.

    2. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Information button for 3 seconds to print a Printer Status Report.

    3. On the printout, look under Connectivity Settings and take note of the URL listed, such as https://192.168.223.1, which is used to access the printer's EWS.

    4. On your computer, open a web browser address bar, and then type the IP address exactly as it is listed, and then press Enter.

    5. If the browser displays a message indicating that accessing the website might not be safe, select the option to continue to the website. Accessing the website will not harm the computer.

    6. When prompted to enter a PIN, type the printer PIN, and then click Submit. The PIN is located on the printer label inside the cartridge access door, located on the right side.

      Note:

      After signing in to the EWS, you can change the default PIN by opening the Settings menu, selecting Security, and then clicking Password settings.

    7. On the EWS home page, click the Network tab, and then click Wireless (802.11).

    8. Select the Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the instructions.

    9. After the setup is complete, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the rear of the printer, and then wait for the printer to connect to the Wi-Fi network, indicated by a solid, blue Wi-Fi light on the control panel.

    10. Finish the printer setup on your computer.

      • Windows: Use the Windows built-in drivers to set up your printer. Search for and open Printers & scanners, and then look for your printer name in the list. If it is not in the list, click Add a printer or scanner. Follow the instructions to add your printer and install the Windows print drivers.

      • macOS: Use Apple's built-in AirPrint drivers to set up the printer. Click the Apple icon , select System Preferences, click Printers & Scanners, and then look for your printer name in the list.
