HP Smart Tank 790, 7600 printers – Cannot scan when tanks are low, very low or need filled

If the ink tanks are low, very low, or out on ink, you cannot scan from the control panel. The printer stops responding, and soft or hard power cycle fails to resolve the issue. To continue scanning from the control panel, you must refill the ink tanks. HP has provided a firmware update that can resolve this problem for certain types of connections.

Update the firmware

Update the firmware from the printer control panel.

  1. On the Home screen of the printer display, touch Menu.

  2. Scroll down, and then touch Tools > Maintenance > Firmware.

  3. Select the option to update firmware.

Try to scan. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Scan using HP Smart

Use the HP Smart app on your mobile device or computer to scan.

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your mobile device or computer.

  2. Click Printer Scan or Scan.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the scan on your mobile device or computer.
