This document provides information on several options that are available for scanning in macOS. The options vary depending
on your macOS operating system and printer model.
Options include Apple's Image Capture (available in macOS 10.8 and newer), or HP Easy Scan (available in macOS 10.10 and newer).
HP multifunction printers with eSCL capability can scan in macOS 10.12 and newer when the eSCL setting is enabled. eSCL is
a protocol that is needed to facilitate scanning over an AirPrint connection and is required by Apple for AirPrint-capable
printers that have a scanner.

Choose an option to scan in macOS
Click an option below to expand the section and then use the information and instructions provided to begin scanning.
If one option doesn't work, click another to find the one that works best for you.
Option one: Scan from HP Easy Scan
Follow these steps to scan using HP Easy Scan (in macOS 10.10 and newer).

Click the link below for your printer type (LaserJet or PageWide):

Click Download to download the HP Easy Start utility.

Launch the app, select the printer, and then let the utility automatically install the software and add the print queue.
Note:
For full-feature scan capability, make sure both Essential Software and HP Easy Scan check boxes are selected.

Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF).

In the Applications folder, or from the Dock, select HP Easy Scan.

To initiate a scan, follow these steps:

Select the printer from the Scanner drop-down list.
Select the printer from the Scanner drop-down list

Select the scan type from the Presets menu.

Select Scan.

To preview or modify the scanned image, do one of the following:

To save the scanned image on your Mac, follow these steps:

Click Send, and then select Folder.
In the Send menu, select "Folder"

In the Where drop-down list, select the destination where you want to save the image.

In the Format drop-down list, select the file type.

Click Save.
Note:
To save multiple pages to a single file, select PDF as the format, and then select the check box next to Save all items to a single file.

Option two: Scan from Apple Image Capture
Follow the steps below to scan using Apple Image Capture (available in macOS 10.8 and newer).
Note:
To use Apple's Image Capture, the HP printer must be configured to meet the new eSCL protocol required by Apple. This capability
is needed in order to scan.

Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF).

In the Applications folder, or from the Dock, click Image Capture.

Select your printer from the Device list. If your printer is connected to a network, select it from the Shared list.
If a "Software for this device is not installed" message displays after you select your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Click Show Details and change any settings as needed.
Note:
Make sure to select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feeder mode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.

Click Scan.
Option three: Scan from Apple Preview
Follow these steps to scan using Apple Preview (available in macOS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11).

Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF).

In the Applications folder, or from the Dock, select Preview.

From the Preview File menu, click Import from Scanner.
Note:
For macOS 10.7 users only: If your printer connects to a network, click Include Networked Devices, and then click Import from Scanner in the Preview File menu to display your networked printer in the list.

Select your printer from the list.
An overview of the scan will display.
If a "Software for this device is not installed" message displays after you select your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Click Show Details and change any settings as needed.
Note:
Make sure to select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feeder mode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.

Click Scan.
Option four: Scan from the Print & Scan window
Follow these steps to scan from the Print & Scan window (available in macOS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11).

Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Click the Apple menu
, and then select System Preferences.

Click the Printers & Scanners menu.

Select your printer in the left pane.
-
Click the Scan tab, and then click Open Scanner.
If a "Software for this device is not installed" message displays after you select your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Click Show Details and change any settings as needed.
Note:
Make sure to select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feeder mode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.

Click Scan.
Note:
If the Scan or Print icons do not display, remove and re-add the printer.
