RESOLUTION
Considerations when powering HP ZBook Mobile Workstations via USB-C:
NOTE: USB-C Power Consumer is not supported on the ZBook 15v G5 Mobile Workstation.
Power Delivery to the ZBook
Factors
USB-C PD (Power Delivery) maximum power specification
  • The USB-C Power Delivery Specification allows for maximum of 100W power delivery over USB-C.
  • The ZBook Create, Studio, Studio x360, 15, and 17 models listed in the scope use 150W or 200W AC adapters.
  • When these models are powered by USB-C accessories capable of maximum power delivery (100W), performance and battery charge rate will be impacted when system load exceeds available power.
  • Some ZBook models with Discrete Graphics will not charge the battery when the system load exceeds available USB-C power delivery.
USB-C PD is less than maximum power specification
  • The performance and battery charge times of all ZBooks listed the scope may be impacted when used with docks and adapters supplying less than the full 100W power delivery allowed by the USB-C specification, and may be impacted whether or not the system is loaded.
USB-C PD meets minimum requirement for charging
  • If USB-C Power Delivery does not meet minimum requirements, ZBook battery charging may not occur, even if ZBook is powered off.
  • Sufficient power for charging varies by ZBook model, but in general is: 27W for 14u/15u, 65W for Studio and Create, and 90W for 15/17.
  • ZBook battery charging may not occur or may be intermittent with any level of system load.
Performance and Battery Charge impact mitigation
When performance and/or battery charge time impacts are unacceptably high on USB-C power, the following actions may help:
  • Reduce system load
  • Use the AC Adapter supplied with the ZBook instead of, or in addition to, USB-C power
  • Use an HP Thunderbolt Docking station with 230W(G2) or 200W/150W (G1) power adapter
  • Place the notebook in S3 (Sleep), S4 (Hibernate), or S5 (power off) if the battery fails to charge while the unit is powered on
