SUPPORT COMMUNICATION- CUSTOMER ADVISORY

Document ID: c05916505

Version: 1

Advisory: HP Z4, Z6, Z8 G4 Workstations - Users May Experience Device Manager Errors on Graphic Cards and/or Issues Installing Graphics Card Drivers in Legacy Boot Mode.

Notice:: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the release date. The document is subject to change without notice.

Release date : 29-Jan-2018

Last updated : 30-Jan-2018

DESCRIPTION
Customers may observe error codes under Device Manager and/or issues with installing the graphics driver on second graphics, including features capability, when multiple graphic cards are configured in a Z4 G4, Z6 G4 and Z8 G4.
Using multiple graphic cards and setting the system to Legacy boot mode with Windows 10 operating systems, may cause the system to provide errors that are observed in Device Manager under "Display Adapters" and/or not being able to install the graphics driver. The issues seem to occur when changing the boot scheme to Legacy from UEFI mode, even though the Operating System boot hard drive is created with a GPT partition. The system, when changed to Legacy boot mode, causes the Legacy option ROM for graphics to be initiated.
The failure code may report multiple errors as bulleted below specifically when F10 setting, "Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable".
  • Failure to use specific features of the graphic card, because driver will not install on second graphics or primary graphics in a secondary slot.
  • Code 12: Resource Conflict error

SCOPE
The issue has only been observed with more than one graphic cards installed in the workstation.
Windows 10 platforms (HP Z4, Z6, Z8 G4 Workstations) are currently the only observed impacted operating system.
Issue only observed when changing the boot mode to Legacy Enabled with Secure Boot Disable.
Systems:
  • HP Z4 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z4 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z6 G4 Base Model Workstation
  • HP Z6 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z6 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z8 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z8 G4 Workstation
Operating Systems:
  • Non-OS Specific
RESOLUTION
Power on the system and enter into F10 settings. Under the "Advanced" section select "Secure Boot Configuration" choose the setting that best works for your environment:
- Change from "Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable" to "Legacy Support Disable and Secure Boot Enable". Save the new settings.
OR
- Change from "Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable" to "Legacy Support Disable and Secure Boot Disable". Save the new settings.
This will take the system out of a Legacy boot to a UEFI boot where the issue is not observed.
*Note: If you are using Legacy boot mode with an MBR partition and running into this issue we suggest setting the system to All UEFI with Secure Boot enabled, but this will require a re-image of the system so that it has a GPT partition.
