HP 3115m Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Wireless WAN Module

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the wireless WAN module for the HP 3115m Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.
Tools required
  • Small, smooth-tipped needle nose pliers (optional)
  • Tweezers
  • Small, Phillips-head (P1 and P00) screwdrivers

The replacement part number will vary depending on the wireless WAN module that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Wireless WAN module removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2.   note:
    The following video depicts a specific configuration of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to all configurations of the notebook.
  3.   caution:
    Use care when disconnecting the wireless antenna cables from the wireless WAN module. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
    Carefully disconnect the wireless WAN antenna cables from the wireless WAN module by grasping the connectors with a small pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers.
      note:
    Make careful note of which wireless WAN antenna cable is connected to each terminal on the wireless WAN module for later replacement.
  4. Remove the 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the wireless WAN module to the system board and allow it to release to the spring tension position.
  5. Grasp the wireless WAN module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  6. Place the wireless WAN module in a static dissipative bag.
Wireless WAN module replacement
  1. Grasp the wireless WAN module by the edges and remove it from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Align the notch in the wireless WAN module with the key in the wireless WAN module slot on the system board.
  3. At an angle, gently insert the wireless WAN module into its slot on the system board.
  4. Press the wireless WAN module down and replace the 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the wireless WAN module to the system board.
  5.   caution:
    Use care when connecting the wireless antenna cables to the wireless WAN module. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
    Reconnect the wireless WAN antenna cables to the wireless WAN module.
  6. Route the wireless WAN antenna cables through the routing channel in the base enclosure.
