HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing PCIe Graphics Card

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the PCIe graphics card for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the PCIe graphics card that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the PCIe graphics card, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select PCIe graphics card from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
PCIe graphics card removal
  note:
This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the auxiliary power cable from the card.
  3. Press the two release latches and rotate the PCI retention clamp until it is fully open.
  4. Push out and hold the locking tab on the PCIe slot and partially lift the front end of the card out of the slot.
  5. If the card has a support bracket, press the release tab on the PCI card guide and lift the back end of the card out of the slot.
  6. Lift straight up on the card to remove it from the chassis.
      note:
    If customer is not replacing the card with another card, cover the open slots on the PCI bulkhead with metal slot covers.
PCIe graphics card replacement
  1. If customer is installing a new graphics card, remove the slot covers from the appropriate slots on the PCI bulkhead.
      note:
    Some cards require two slots.
  2. Align the connectors on the card with the slot on the system board.
  3. If the card has a support bracket, align it with slot in the PCI card guide.
  4. Lower the card down over the slot on the system board.
  5. Press down on the card until it is fully seated.
  6. Rotate the PCI retention clamp down over the PCI bulkhead.
  7. Press the two PCI retention clamp tabs on the rear of the chassis until they lock into place.
  8. Connect the auxiliary power cable to the card.
