HP ProBook 4535s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Top Cover

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the top cover for the HP ProBook 4535s Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The end user should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.
Tools required
  • Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdriver
  • T-8 hex screwdriver

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the top cover that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

Top cover removal

Observe all precautions when removing and replacing components.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the four rubber screw plugs from the bottom corners of the base enclosure.
  3. Remove the ten 6-mm T-8 hex screws that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  4. Remove the three 3-mm P1 Phillips-head screws in the optical disk drive bay that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  5. Remove the three 3-mm P1 Phillips-head broad-head screws in the battery bay that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  6. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  7. Gently lift up on the locking bar of the finger print reader board ZIF connector and remove the finger print reader board ribbon cable.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  8. Gently lift up on the locking bar of the wireless function button board ZIF connector and remove the wireless function button board ribbon cable.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Gently lift up on the locking bar of the power button board ZIF connector and remove the power button board ribbon cable.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  10. Disconnect the speaker cable from the system board.
  11. Remove the six 6-mm T-8 hex screws that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  12. Beginning with the rear edge, carefully pry up the rear and outside edges of the top cover to disengage it from the base enclosure.
      note:
    Do not lift the top cover further away from the notebook than necessary to access the Media Card Reader combo board ribbon cable and ZIF connector.
  13. Gently lift up on the locking bar of the Media Card Reader combo board ZIF connector and remove the Media Card Reader combo board ribbon cable.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  14. Remove the top cover.
Top cover replacement
  note:
Before installing a new top cover, remove the following from the old top cover and install onto the new top cover:
  • Media Card Reader Combo Board
  • Power Button Board
  • Speakers
  • Wireless Function Button Board
  1. Place the top cover on the base enclosure so that the Media Card Reader combo board ribbon cable and ZIF connector are accessible.
  2. Insert the Media Card Reader combo board ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Replace the top cover on the base enclosure and press down around the edges to snap into place.
  4. Replace the six 6-mm T-8 hex screws that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  5. Connect the speaker cable to the system board.
  6. Insert the power button board ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Insert the wireless function board ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  8. Insert the finger print reader board ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  10. Replace the three 3-mm P1 Phillips-head broad-head screws in the battery bay that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  11. Replace the three 3-mm P1 Phillips-head screws in the optical disk drive bay that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  12. Replace the ten 6-mm T-8 hex screws that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
  13. Replace the four rubber screw plugs in the bottom of the base enclosure.
