HP Designjet 130 Series - Installation Error: "Setup program has encountered a severe error"

Issue

When installing the HP Designjet 130 series printer, a severe error may occur. The text of the error is as follows:
The HP Designjet 130 Series Setup program has encountered a severe error and will now exit. Restart your computer and run Setup again.
This error is usually caused by the computer not being able to find the printer on the network. Follow these steps until the issue is corrected.

Solution

  • Solution 1
    1. Exit from the error screen.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Run Setup. If the issue continues, go to the next solution.
  • Solution 2
    1. Connect the Ethernet cable that shipped with the printer, and run Setup again.
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install. If the issue continues, go to the next solution.
  • Solution 3
    1. Print the four-tap test print by following these steps:
      1. Press and hold the power button.
      2. Then holding down the power button, press and release the resume four times.
      3. Release the power button.
        note:
This would print a three-page report.
    2. Make a note of the (default) IP address listed on the I/O Section page.
    3. Use the Add Printer Wizard to install the printer. Follow the instructions for Adding a Standard TCP/IP Port using the IP address that was noted earlier. If the printer does not print after adding the TCP/IP port, it is probably due to a network communication issue. Proceed to solution 4.
      OR
Continue the installation without configuring the IP address to the desired IP of your choice, in other words, install the driver with the default IP address. In the following picture, do not click Change TCP/IP Settings. Finish the installation and proceed to solution 4.
  • Solution 4
Make sure the printer is properly connected to the network before running Setup. Also make sure a firewall is not interfering with printer communication. If the printer is properly connected, follow these steps:
    1. Open Internet Explorer (or any available browser).
    2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) of the printer with the IP address.
    3. Go to the Networking tab.
    4. Click Network settings on the left.
    5. Enter the desired IP address for the printer, subnet mask, and the default gateway.
    6. Click Apply.
    7. Click OK.
