HP Notebook PCs - Recover Windows MIE Operating System On Mini Notebook Using HP Recovery

This document covers how to recover a Compaq/HP Notebook PC originally configured with Windows Mobile Internet Experience Operating System.
For notebooks originally configured with the Windows 7 operating system, see HP Guided Solution – Performing an HP System Recovery.
For notebooks originally configured with the Windows Vista operating system, see Recover Windows Vista Operating System Using HP Recovery.
For notebooks originally configured with XP or any other operating system, to verify that you are using the proper recovery procedure, see Overview Of Recovering Or Reinstalling The Operating System.
See FAQ On Repairing Or Reinstalling The Operating System for answers to frequently asked questions.
If a hardware component stops working because a driver or firmware is corrupted, it may be necessary to re-install the required drivers to resolve the problem. However, if the operating system becomes corrupted and the computer stops functioning properly because of a virus, malware or significant data failure on the hard drive, you may need to recover the computer to its original configuration by reinstalling the original operating system.
Understanding the difference between recovery and restore
The difference between performing a recovery and restoring the computer is the procedure's impact on files saved on your computer.
  • A Recovery erases the hard disk drive and re-installs the original operating system, software applications, and drivers that were factory installed at the time of purchase. It will not recover any operating system updates, new or updated applications that you may have installed, nor will it recover your personal data files, such as e-mails, personal correspondence, music, or photos you have saved on the computer.
  • A Restore copies files from a backup disc and resets the computer image to the conditions that existed at an earlier point in time called a restore point.
Recovering your information
In case of system failure or instability, you can recover the operating system and programs installed at the factory.
  caution:
The recovery process reformats and completely erases the hard drive. All the files you have created and any software you have installed on the notebook are permanently removed. The recovery process reinstalls the original operating system, software, and drivers. Software, drivers, and updates that were not installed with the factory image must be reinstalled using Update Manager.
Before beginning, the notebook must be connected to AC power during the recovery process and the recovery process may take several hours to complete. If possible, all personal files should be backed up before starting the recovery process. See Backing Up and Restoring User Files In Mobile Internet Experience
The HP Mini with MIE provides the following recovery options:
  • System Restore (installed on the notebook):
You can use the System Restore utility to recover the original operating system and programs.
  • HP MIE Restore Image Creator (using a USB flash drive):
If you are unable to boot (start up) the notebook, and if you are unable to use System Restore, you can use another computer to download the HP MIE Restore Image Creator utility and create a bootable USB flash drive (purchased separately). You can then use the USB flash drive to install the HP MIE operating system and programs on your notebook.
Using System Restore
To use the System Restore utility that is installed on the notebook, follow these steps:
  1. Turn on or restart the notebook, and then press the Esc key repeatedly while the F10 = BIOS Setup Options message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen. The System Restore page opens.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select System Restore, and then press Enter.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to recover the system.
Using HP MIE Restore Image Creator
If the System Restore utility is not available due to limited disc space, you can use the Restore Image Creator to create the recovery image on a bootable USB flash drive.
To use the Restore Image Creator option, you will need:
  • A 2GB (minimum) USB flash drive (must be purchased separately)
  • An additional computer running either a Windows or Linux operating system
  caution:
Launching the Restore Image Creator utility reformats the USB drive and erases all files. Back up any files you have on your USB drive to the hard drive before proceeding.
To perform this recovery option:
  • Download the HP MIE Restore Image Creator utility onto another computer that uses either a Windows or a Linux operating system.
  • Create the bootable recovery image on the USB flash drive
  • Using the bootable USB flash drive, recover the image on the HP Mini.
