HP Compaq 6735s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Switch Cover

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Switch Cover for the HP Compaq 6735s Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User must possess extensive product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and be familiar with the operating system.

Tools required

Small Torx T8 screwdriver.

Parts required

Switch Cover removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the two 9 mm T8 Torx screws from near the back corners of the notebook that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
  3. Remove the three 3 mm T8 Torx screws inside the battery bay.
  4. Remove the two 7 mm T8 Torx screws marked with a keyboard icon on either side of the memory compartment that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  5. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  6. Pull up on the outer edges of the switch cover to detach it from the base enclosure and move it away from the top edge of the keyboard. Do not remove the switch cover.
  7. Lift the top edge of the keyboard and place it upside down on the palm rest.
  8. Using minimal force, push the locking bar out on the ZIF connector and disconnect the switch cover ribbon cable from the system board
    note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Lift and remove the switch cover.

Switch Cover replacement

  1. Place the switch cover along the top edge of the notebook and insert the switch cover ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board.
  2. Push the locking bar in to lock the ZIF connector.
  3. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover and lower the keyboard into place.
  4. Place the switch cover into position on the top cover.
  5. Press along the entire length of the switch cover to snap it into place.
  6. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  7. Ensure that all of the switch cover tabs are snapped into place by pressing along the rear edge of the battery bay.
  8. Replace the two 7 mm T8 Torx screws marked with a keyboard icon on either side of the memory compartment that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  9. Replace the three 3 mm T8 Torx screws inside the battery bay.
  10. Replace the two 9 mm T8 Torx screws on the back corners of the notebook that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
