Increased Performance
Systems with CardBus realize an increase in PC Card functionality and performance in strategic areas. CardBus delivers this performance in two ways:
  • CardBus allows PC Cards and hosts to use 32-bit bus mastering, which improves system throughput capabilities
  • CardBus operates at speeds up to 33 MHz. This allows new, high performance products, including full motion, full screen video functionality and 100Mbps Ethernet
Multimedia Capabilites
While Zoomed Video (ZV) provides high performance, full screen / full motion video, CardBus further enhances multi-media functionality. This advanced capability is possible as a result of the additional speed and bandwidth capabilities of the CardBus and PCI architectures.
Low Power Consumption
All CardBus PC Cards are designed to function at 3.3 volts, with limited power consumption during power-up, configuration or reset. This limited power operation reduces system power requirements and extends battery life. CardBus software is designed to query the CardBus card, detect the power requirements, and apply the needed power -- or gracefully reject the card, if power requirements exceed the systems resources.(2) Conversely, only those CardBus PC Cards that have reasonable power requirements, will be supported in well-designed CardBus systems.
Expanded multi-function support
CardBus supports up to seven functions in one CardBus card without performance degradation. This multiple function support allows the user to use multiple card functions simultaneously. These functions may be implemented in any combination. Some of the most popular combinations include modem/LAN, modem/audio, and audio/SCSI cards. PC Card 16 systems can also support multi-function cards effectively, but CardBus allows for additional performance capabilities. The exact performance benefits will vary depending on which type of card is being used. For example, the performance requirements and capabilities vary between PC Card 16 and CardBus PC Cards, as well as between modems, LAN cards and SCSI cards.
