HP Designjet 5500 Series Printers - Computer Port Setup and Configuration

Configuring ports on the PC

The two most common ways of configuring a port on your computer are the following:
  • Using the MacroInstaller provided in the box by Hewlett-PackardManual install

Configuring a port using the MacroInstaller

To configure a port using the MacroInstaller, place the CD in the CD ROM Drive. Select Create Network Port Only in the MacroInstaller main menu. The printer can then be selected from a list of available printers or it can be specified directly by its address.
Searching from a list of available printers
  1. Click the Search from a list of available printers radio button and click Next>.Once the search has concluded, the list of available printers appears. Select the printer you want to install and click Next>.Once the printer has been found, the Wizard finds its settings and shows the results. In case any of the settings is incorrect, they can be changed manually. Click Next>.Finally, a results screen appears showing the name and the type of the port that has been created. Click on Next> to finish the port creation.
Specifying a printer by address
  1. Click the Specify a Printer by Address radio button and click Next>.Specify the network printer to install by specifying its Hardware address, IP address, IP hostname, or IPX address and click Next>.Once the printer has been found, the Wizard finds its settings and shows the results. In case any of the settings is incorrect, they can be changed manually. Click Next>.Finally, a results screen appears showing the name and the type of the port that has been created. Click on Next> to finish the port creation.
Configuring a port manually
It is also possible to create ports manually. Create ports during the driver installation process or separately from the installation process of a printer. This second case is useful when an already installed printer has to be connected to a different port.
  1. Open the Printers dialog and go to File, Server Properties. The Server Properties dialog contains tabs where ports can be added, deleted and managed. Click Add Port… and click OK.Select HP Standard TCP/IP port (will be available only if you have previously used the MacroInstaller to create a TCP/IP port). Click New Port.Type the printer IP address in the dialog.
  2. Once the IP address has been typed, a generic name (IP_x.x.x.x, where x.x.x.x is the IP address) will appear as the default port name. This name can be modified if desired. Finally, click Finish to finish the port creation.Connecting a printer to a portOnce a port is created, you can connect a printer to it. To do so, the printer has to be selected in the Printers control panel dialog to access to its properties. Right-click on the printer icon and select Properties. Click the Ports tab. Select the desired port on the list and check the check box to its left. Click OK.
