Description

This Readme file provides specific installation instructions and other information you should know before you perform a firmware upgrade for your HP Series MFP. Installation instructions are provided for Single and Multiple Printer Updates.

What is included in a Remote Firmware Upgrade (RFU)?

The HP Printer Remote Firmware Upgrade file available from the hp web site contains firmware for the printer, embedded JetDirect (if applicable), and HP paper handling accessories used with the device in one convenient download file. When the Remote Firmware Upgrade file is sent to the HP MFP, the firmware for the engine and all connected accessories is upgraded.

Who needs this firmware?

Similar to Hewlett Packard providing improved software for your HP MFP, Hewlett Packard provides firmware updates for your printer periodically through its supported lifecycle. A firmware update may be necessary if it is determined that you may benefit from the resolution of any issue that is documented below. These updates are available on the HP support web site.

NOTE: If you are using a third-party application on your HP CM8060/CM8050 Color MFP, contact the application vendor before updating the firmware to see if your application(s) have been qualified with this firmware release.

Determining the current version level of your firmware

To determine the current level of firmware installed on the device:
  1. Go to the MFP's control panel.
  2. Press the "Administration" Icon on the touch screen.
  3. Select the "Information"" selection on the touch screen.
  4. Select "Configuration Page".
  5. Select the "Print" button.
On the printed Configuration Page look in the section marked "Device Information" for the "Firmware Datecode". The firmware datecode will look something like this: 20070824 72.024.0

Installation Instructions

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  1. Prior to upgrading, please perform a machine data NVM Backup and ask the customer to backup their customer data. Should you need to downgrade after the upgrade for any reason you will need to restore both the machine data and customer data in order to restore the machine completely back to its previous state.
  2. DO NOT REMOVE POWER from the MFP during an upgrade unless the MFP specifically asks you to. Removing power from the MFP during an upgrade can damage the device. If power is lost to the MFP turn the hard power switch at the side of the MFP off and wait for 30 seconds then power back on. The MFP will boot and ask you to resend the upgrade.
  3. The .RFU file is quite large. Depending on your connection speed, downloading the file could take several minutes. The upgrade process can take up to 45 minutes, depending on how much the firmware has changed in comparison to the version that is currently on the device.

SUPPORTED UPGRADE METHODS:

If you need to upgrade the device firmware, you can use any of the following methods, please be sure to backup all data before you begin.

For each of these methods, you must first download the firmware upgrade file from www.hp.com/go/CM8060edgeline_sw or www.hp.com/go/CM8050edgeline_sw, and save the file on the network or on your computer. The file has the extension .RFU (remote firmware upgrade).

Use Copier Diagnostics Field Tool (E) to upgrade the firmware
NOTE: The method is for field service personnel only. This method can be used from the Ready state when using a USB flash drive. Please see the service manual for details.

Use Copier Diagnostics Field Tool (L) to upgrade the firmware
NOTE: The method is for field service personnel only. This method can be used from the Startup Menu in the case of USB connection, from the Ready state when using LAN connection. Please see the service manual for details.

Use HP Web Jetadmin to upgrade the firmware
NOTE: The device must be in the Ready state using this method.
  1. Start HP Web Jetadmin.
  2. Open the Device Management folder in the drop-down list in the Navigation panel. Navigate to the Device Lists folder.
  3. Expand the Device Lists folder and select All Devices. Locate the device in the list, and then click to select it. If you need to upgrade the firmware for multiple devices, select all of them by pressing the Ctrl key as you click the name of each device.
  4. Locate the drop-down box for Device Tools in the upper-right corner of the window. Select Update Printer Firmware from the action list.
  5. If the name of the .RFU file is not listed in the All Available Images box, click Browse in the Upload New Firmware Image dialog box and navigate to the location of the .RFU file that you downloaded from the Web site. If the filename is listed, select it.
  6. Click Upload to move the .RFU file from your hard drive to the HP Web Jetadmin server. After the upload is complete, the browser window refreshes.
  7. Select the .RFU file from the Printer Firmware Update drop-down menu.
  8. Click Update Firmware. HP Web Jetadmin sends the selected .RFU file to the device. The control panel shows messages that indicate the progress of the upgrade. At the end of the upgrade process, the control panel shows the Ready message.

Use FTP to upgrade the firmware
NOTE: The device must be in the Ready state to use this method.

This procedure requires that the device be connected to a Windows network. Before beginning, obtain the device network address or hostname. To find the address, on the device control panel, touch Network Address.
  1. Open a command prompt on your computer: Click Start, click Run, and then type cmd.
  2. Type: ftp <NETWORK ADDRESS>. For example, if the network address is 192.168.0.90, type ftp 192.168.0.90.
  3. Press Enter on the keyboard.
  4. When prompted for the user name, press Enter.
  5. When prompted for the password, press Enter.
  6. Type bin at the command prompt.
  7. Press Enter. The message 200 Types set to I, Using binary mode to transfer files appears in the command window.
  8. Type put <filename> where <filename> is the name of the .RFU file that was downloaded from the Web site, including the path. For example, type put C:\CM8060\8060FW.RFU, and then press Enter.
NOTE: If the file name or path includes a space, you must enclose the file name or path in quotation marks. For example, type put "C:\MY DOCUMENTS\CM8060\8060FW.RFU" The following series of messages appear in the command window:
    • 200 PORT command successful
    • 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection
    • 226 Ready
    • 226 Processing Job
    • 226 Transfer complete
Then, a message that contains the transfer-speed information appears.
  9. The download process begins and the firmware is updated on the device. This can take approximately five minutes. Let the process finish without further interaction with the device or computer.
NOTE: The device automatically turns off and then on again after processing the upgrade.

This procedure requires that the device be connected to a Windows network. Before beginning, obtain the device network address or hostname. To find the address, on the device control panel, touch Network Address.
  1. Open a command prompt on your computer: Click Start, click Run, and then type cmd.
  2. Type the following: copy /B <FILENAME> \\<COMPUTERNAME>\<SHARENAME>, where <FILENAME> is the name of the .RFU file (including the path), <COMPUTERNAME> is the name of the computer from which the device is being shared, and <SHARENAME> is the device share name. For example: C:\>copy /b C:\8060fW.RFU \\YOUR_SERVER\YOUR_COMPUTER.
NOTE: If the file name or path includes a space, you must enclose the file name or path in quotation marks. For example, type: C:\>copy /b "C:\MY DOCUMENTS\8060FW.RFU" \\YOUR_SERVER\YOUR_COMPUTER.
  3. Press Enter on the keyboard. The control panel shows a message that indicates the progress of the firmware upgrade. At the end of the upgrade process, the control panel returns to the Home screen. The message 1 file(s) copied appears on the computer screen.

Expected device messages during an upgrade

The device displays three messages during a normal update process:

PRINTER MESSAGE
EXPLANATION
RECEIVING UPGRADE
Displayed from the time the device recognizes the beginning of an .RFU update until the time the printer has verified the validity and integrity of the .RFU update
PERFORMING UPGRADE: x% Complete Displayed while the device is actually reprogramming the DIMM with the .RFU update, this message may actually not be seen due to how fast this stage goes.
Processing... Occurs at the very start and the very end of the upgrade. May happen too fast to even see. After the second Processing… message the MFP will reboot completing the upgrade process.

NOTE: To verify that the firmware update succeeded, print a Configuration page from the printer's control panel and verify the firmware datecode shown on the Configuration page is the same as the datecode of the .RFU file you downloaded.

Troubleshooting a Firmware Upgrade

Print jobs sent to the printer while an update is in process will not interrupt the update.

The following table lists possible reasons for the failure of a Remote Firmware Update and the corrective action to take for each situation.

REASON FOR FIRMWARE UPDATE FAILURE
RESULT / CORRECTIVE ACTION
.RFU file corrupted
The device will recognize that the file is corrupted and will reject the update. Download the image again from the http://www.hp.com Web site and send the new file to the printer.
Wrong printer model The device will recognize the model in .RFU file mismatch and will reject the update. Download the correct image from the http://www.hp.com Web site and send it to the printer.
Update interrupted. No updated has occurred. A "Resend Upgrade" message will appear on the control panel. Resend the upgrade package.
Download Interrupted No update has occurred. Machine will boot to ready. Resend the upgrade package.

The contents of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed as modifying the License.

You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and may provide additional or different license terms and conditions for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use, reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with the conditions stated in this License.

  5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise, any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of this License, without any additional terms or conditions. Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed with Licensor regarding such Contributions.

  6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor, except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.

  7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.

  8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory, whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise, unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill, work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

  9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer, and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity, or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.

APPENDIX: How to apply the Apache License to your work.

To apply the Apache License to your work, attach the following boilerplate notice, with the fields enclosed by brackets "[]" replaced with your own identifying information. (Don't include the brackets!) The text should be enclosed in the appropriate comment syntax for the file format. We also recommend that a file or class name and description of purpose be included on the same "printed page" as the copyright notice for easier identification within third-party archives.
