Purpose of this document
This document provides specific installation instructions and other information you should know before you install and use the printing system. The installation instructions are for the following operating systems:
Who needs this software?
All users require this printing-system software. Network clients need the installation CD or the name of the appropriate network directory to install the software on their individual workstations.
Overview of the printing-system components
The CD that is included with the printers has software for IBM-compatible computer systems and Apple Macintosh (and Apple-compatible) systems. For more information about a particular printer driver or software component, see the associated online help.
Network administrator software components
HP Web Jetadmin
Network administrators can use HP Web Jetadmin to configure and manage HP printers across a variety of operating systems.
NOTE: HP Web Jetadmin is not included on the software CD. Network administrators can download the HP Web Jetadmin software at the following Web site:
HP Printer Utility for Macintosh OS
Network administrators can use the HP Printer Utility for Macintosh OS X V10.2 and above to configure and manage HP printers from the computer. The printing-system software CD-ROM includes Adobe PPD files for the Macintosh printer driver.
Installer Customization Wizard
The printing-system software CD includes the Installer Customization Wizard as one of the installer options. Network administrators can use this utility to create a custom printer-driver installation package that includes organization-specific components. Upon completion, the customization utility produces an executable file (*.EXE). Use the file to install the preconfigured printer drivers on client machines. This utility supports silent, batch operations.
HP Driver Preconfiguration
HP Driver Preconfiguration is a set of tools that allows HP software to be customized and distributed in managed printing environments. Using HP Driver Preconfiguration, administrators can preconfigure the printing and device defaults for HP printer drivers before installing the drivers in the network environment. The HP Preconfiguration solution is also a component of the Installer Customization Wizard and a plug-in for Web Jetadmin.
Most printer-driver-feature settings can be preconfigured, and several of the features can be locked to prevent end-users from changing settings. The following printer-driver features can be locked:
Driver Autoconfiguration
The HP Color LaserJet PCL 6, PCL 5c, and PostScript drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista feature automatic discovery and driver configuration for printer accessories at the time of installation. Some accessories that Driver Autoconfiguration supports are the duplexing unit, optional paper trays, and memory modules.
Update Now
If you have modified the configuration of the HP Color LaserJet CP4005 printer since installation, the driver can be automatically updated with the new configuration in environments that support bidirectional communication. Click the Update Now button to automatically reflect the new configuration in the driver.
NOTE: The Update Now feature is not supported in environments where shared Windows 2000 or Windows XP clients are connected to Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista hosts.
End-user software components
Printer drivers
A printer driver is a software program that other software programs use to gain access to the printer features. Typically, you install a printer driver for each printer. The printing-system software CD that came with your printer includes the following printer drivers, all of which have similar graphical user interfaces:
The most recent printer drivers and printing software are available at the following Web site:
Additional printer drivers might be available from an HP distributor or from online sources. See the "Readme" file or the user guide for more information about obtaining printer drivers and other HP software.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Use Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later to view the online manuals. If the printing-system installer does not detect a portable document format (PDF) reader on the system, you are prompted to install the Acrobat Reader from the printing-system software CD.
Printer documentation
Administrator and user documents are located on the printer CD in the Manuals or Documentation folder.
NOTE: Some documents are not available in all languages on the CD. Please check the following Web sites for more documentation and information:
NOTE: In working toward the goal of allowing everyone access to technology, HP has provided the user guides for this product in hypertext markup language (HTML) Help format (.CHM), which is compatible with most screen-reader programs.
