HP DeskJet, ENVY 6000, 6000e, 6400, 6400e printers - Learn about your printer

Get to know the printer features, including control panel icons and buttons, scan and copy options, error codes that display, and what the front light colors indicate.

Printer overview

Your printer has status lights and a control panel that guides you when needed.

Callout	Description
1	Edge light bar: indicates printer connection status or error states
2	Paper tray light: indicates paper-related issues and jams
3	Cartridge access door light: indicates ink cartridge errors. Open the access door to check for lights.
4	Control panel with lights all off
5	Control panel with all lights illuminated: Control panel lights only appear as needed.

The Power button and Wi-Fi Reset button are on the back of the printer.

2	Wi-Fi Reset button: Press and hold for 5 seconds. A pulsing purple light indicates setup mode.

Open the cartridge access door to view the cartridge lights. The Black and Color cartridges each have a light, indicating which cartridge has an error.

Scan and copy

Scan and copy documents from the scanner glass or the automatic document feeder (ADF). Scan photos only from the scanner glass.

To scan, open the HP Smart app and click the Scan tile. Go to How to scan with an HP printer for more information.

Note:

The control panel does not light up when a document or photo is not loaded.

Load the item in the ADF or on the scanner glass.

The control panel buttons light up.
Press a copy button on the printer control panel.
- To copy in color, press the Color Copy button on the left.
- To copy in black and white, press the White Copy button on the right.
- To increase the number of copies, press the button repeatedly for the number of copies you want.

Error codes

Error codes display in the number counter on the printer control panel.

Printer error codes
Error Code	Description
E0	Indicates an unusable cartridge: This occurs when one or both ink cartridges need attention. Reseat both cartridges, clean the ink cartridge contacts, restart the printer, and replace one or both cartridges if necessary.
E3	Indicates a paper jam error: Open the door to investigate the issue. Go to Carriage jam or E3 error for more information.
E4	Indicates carriage cartridge errors: Open the door to investigate the issue. Go to E4 (Paper jam) error for more information.
E9	Indicates an error after a firmware update or printer reset: Restore factory defaults on the printer, open the HP Smart app, hide the printer, and then re-add it in the app. Go to HP ENVY 6000e, 6400e printers - E9 error for more information.

Light patterns

Find the front light pattern in the following table to learn the printer status and check if any action is required.

Note:

To change the light bar brightness, open the HP Smart app, and then click the printer name or icon. Under Preferences, click Printer Display/Lights to adjust the brightness level.

Printer light patterns
Lighting pattern	Description
	Light bar pulses white: The printer is processing a print job. You do not need to take any action.
	Light bar glows light blue: The printer is idle and ready for use. The light dims when the printer is in Sleep mode. Note: See the Wi-Fi light on the control panel to understand the Wi-Fi connection status.
	Light bar glows amber: The printer is in an error state. Look at the other lights and any error codes on the printer to find and resolve the error.
	Light bar pulses purple: The printer is in Auto Wireless Connect (AWC) mode and is waiting to connect to your computer or mobile device.
	Light bar pulses light green: The printer is turning on or off, or updating. CAUTION: Do not use the printer during an update.
