HP printer does not turn on

The printer does not turn on or respond when you use the Power button or switch. All the lights are off, and there is no sound or movement from the printer.

Identify the power supply for your printer and refer to one of the following sections that matches it.

Printer with internal power supply
Printer with external power supply
Printer with battery power supply

Internal power supply

If the printer uses an internal power supply, make sure the power module, power cord, and wall outlet are working correctly.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Recycle power to the printer

Unplug the printer and then reconnect the printer to reset the power module.

Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
After the printer has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the printer.
Plug the power cord directly into the wall outlet.
Depending on your printer model, use the appropriate steps to start a Power On/Off cycle:
- Printers with a Power button: Press and release the Power button. Do not hold the button down.
  
  Note:
  If you press and hold the Power button too long, the printer might turn on and then off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button again.
- Printers with a Power switch: Press the Power switch to the Off position, and then press it to the On position.
If the printer does not turn on, wait 10 seconds, and then press the Power button or reset the Power switch again.

Test the power source with another power cord

Determine if your power source is working correctly. If you have another power cord, connect it to the printer and a working power outlet.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
Connect the printer to a different working outlet.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting.
- If the printer does not turn on, continue with these steps.
Find a power cord with the same connector as your printer power cord, and then connect the cord to the printer and to the wall outlet.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting. If you want to order a compatible replacement power cord, go to the HP Parts Store (in English).
- If the printer does not turn on, replace the power module. Go to the HP Parts Store (in English) to purchase the module, and then follow any instructions that come with the parts to install or connect it.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

External power supply

If your printer uses an external power supply, make sure the wall outlet, power cord, and power module are working correctly.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Check the compatibility of the external power module

Make sure the external power module is compatible with the printer.

Locate the specifications on the external power module.
Make sure the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the power module match the voltage and amperage specifications on the printer.

If the power module is not compatible, obtain a replacement module that works with your printer. Go to the HP Parts Store for options.

Recycle power to the printer

Unplug the printer and then reconnect the printer to reset the power module.

Disconnect the power cord from the printer.

After the printer has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the printer.

Most external power modules have an LED light to indicate that it is receiving power. Verify that the light is on.
- If the light is on, have the printer serviced or replaced.
- If the light is not on, continue with these steps.
Find a power cord with the same connector and power module specifications as your printer power cord, and then connect the cord to the printer and to the wall outlet.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting. If you want to order a compatible replacement power cord, go to the HP Parts Store (in English).
- If the printer does not turn on, replace the power module. Go to the HP Parts Store (in English) for options.

Service the printer

Mobile printer with a battery

Check for power issues if the printer does not turn on when plugged in or when using the battery.

Printer does not turn on when plugged in

If the mobile printer does not turn on when the power cord is connected to the printer and a wall outlet, test the power module, power outlet, and power cord.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Remove the battery from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.

Printer does not turn on with battery power

If your printer battery is not powering the printer, make sure the wall outlet, power cord, and power module are working correctly, then replace the battery if necessary.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Remove, check, and reinstall the battery

Make sure the printer battery is clean, undamaged, and installed correctly.

Remove the battery from the printer.

Mobile printers with a battery cover: Remove the battery cover by pushing the battery cover latch to the right, and then pull the battery cover toward you to remove it. Once the battery cover has been removed, push on the battery latch, and then slide the battery out of its slot.

Mobile printers without a battery cover: Slide the battery release slider on the top of the battery to the left. Pull out the right end of the battery, and then remove the battery from the printer.

Check the metal contacts on the battery and in the printer battery slot.
- If the battery contacts are damaged, replace the battery.
- If the printer battery slot contacts are damaged, service or replace the printer.
- If there is no damage found, clean the battery and printer contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a clean, lint-free cloth.

Reinstall the battery.

Mobile printers with a battery cover: Slide the battery into its slot, and then push the left side of the battery until it clicks into place. Slide the battery cover into its slot, and then make sure the left side of the cover clicks into place.

Mobile printers without a battery cover: Reinstall the battery by inserting the left end into the battery slot, and then pushing the battery into the battery slot until it clicks into place.

With the printer connected to a wall outlet, allow the battery to charge for 2 hours, and then try printing on battery power.

Test the power module

Confirm that the printer turns on with the power cord connected. If it does not turn on, reset the power module.

With the power cord connected to the printer and a working wall outlet, turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, wait 2 hours, disconnect the power cable, and try using the printer with battery power only. If the printer turns on, the battery needed charging.
- If printer does not turn on, continue with these steps.
Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Remove the battery from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
After the printer has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the printer.
Plug the power cord directly into the wall outlet.

Note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
Reinstall the battery.
Press and release the Power button to start a Power On/Off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

If the printer does not turn on, wait 10 seconds, and then press the Power button again.
With the printer connected to a wall outlet, allow the battery to charge for 2 hours, and then try printing on battery power.

Test the power source with another power cord

Determine if your power source and power cord are working correctly. If you have another power cord, connect it to the printer and a working power outlet.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
Connect the printer to a different working outlet.

Note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, leave the printer plugged in, make sure the battery is installed, and let the battery charge for two hours.
- If the printer does not turn on, continue with these steps.
Find a power cord with the same connectors as your printer power cord, and then connect the cord to the printer and to the wall outlet.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, replace the original power cable. Go to the HP Parts Store (in English) to purchase a compatible replacement cord.
- If the printer does not turn on, replace the power module. Go to the HP Parts Store (in English) to purchase the module, and then follow any instructions that come with the parts to install or connect it.
- If the printer powers on with a new cable or power module, allow the battery to charge, and then try using the printer on battery power only. If the printer does not turn on, replace the battery. Contact HP Customer Support for more information about replacing the battery.

Service the printer
