HP OMEN PCs - Using NVIDIA SLI Dual Graphics Cards

This document applies to HP OMEN computers with dual NVIDIA graphics cards.

Learn more about Scalable Link Interface (SLI) and dual graphics card configurations.

What is SLI?

Scalable Link Interface (SLI) is a communication protocol between two NVIDIA graphics cards using a physical bridge. This technology allows data transfer, load balancing, and composited rendering to take place.

Requirements:

750w or larger power supply
Two identical NVIDIA graphics cards that support SLI

A list of compatible cards can be found at: SLI Supported GPUs (in English)
60.96mm SLI bridge (medium)

note:
Some OMEN PCs are sold with an SLI setup, and others can be upgraded or configured by the customer after purchase.

Setting up the hardware

To use SLI, both graphics cards and the SLI bridge must be installed.

Instructions to install a graphics card can be found at: Graphics Card Replacement Instructions

Install the SLI Bridge using the following steps:

Turn off the computer, and disconnect the power cable from the rear of the computer.
Press the release latch and remove the side panel.

Align the SLI bridge with the connectors on both graphics card, then apply firm even pressure across both cards.

Setting up the NVIDIA software

Use the NVIDIA Control Panel to enable SLI.

In Windows, search for and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
Click 3D Settings from the task list, then select Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX.

In the SLI configuration area, click Maximize 3D performance.
Close the NVIDIA Control Panel, and restart the computer.

Resolving common issues

Use these steps to address problems with SLI.

There is no video on the monitor

If the computer is on but there is no video output to the monitor, try using the graphics card that is the closest to the CPU.

The computer does not boot after configuring SLI

If the computer fails to boot after configuring SLI, use the following steps:

Boot into Safe Mode.

See HP PCs - Windows Safe Mode (Windows 10, 8) for instructions to boot into Safe Mode.
In Windows, search for and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
Click 3D Settings from the task list, then select Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX.
In the SLI configuration area, click Disable SLI.
Close the NVIDIA Control Panel, and restart the computer.

Game play issues

If the computer is exhibiting low frame rate, errors, or poor display quality, try the following troubleshooting steps:

note:
Not all games support SLI. Check with the game developer or support site for specific information about the game.

Try a different game. If the issue persists, there may be an issue with one of the graphics cards.
Update the video drivers, then restart the computer. If this has no effect continue to the next step.
Perform a fresh install of the latest video drivers, then restart the computer. If the issue persists continue to the next step.
In Windows, search for and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
Click 3D Settings from the task list, then select Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX.
In the SLI configuration area, click Disable SLI.
Close the NVIDIA Control Panel, and restart the computer.

The second graphics card and an SLI bridge are installed, but there is no option to enable SLI

If the option to enable SLI is missing from the NVIDIA Control Panel, try the following steps:

note:
The installed graphics cards must be identical to enable SLI.

Update the video drivers, then restart the computer. If this has no effect continue to the next step.
Perform a fresh install of the latest video drivers, then restart the computer.
