HP OfficeJet 200 Mobile Printers - Ink Cartridge Errors

This document is for the HP OfficeJet 200, 200c, 202, and 202c Mobile Printers.
After you install an ink cartridge, one of the following error messages displays on the printer control panel:
  • Cartridge Problem
  • Incompatible Cartridge
  • Cartridges Missing
Step 1: Make sure the cartridges are compatible
An ink cartridge error displays if the wrong ink cartridge is installed.
Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.
  1. If necessary, select your country/region.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.
You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.
To purchase ink cartridges through other retailers, make note of the following ink cartridges that work with your printer.

If installing genuine HP ink cartridges did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Remove, inspect, and then reseat the ink cartridges
The printer might display an error if the ink cartridges are not correctly installed.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  4. To release the ink cartridge, lift the ink cartridge latch.

  5. Remove the ink cartridge from its slot.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  6. Inspect for and remove the any protective tape from the contacts.
      caution:
    Do not try to remove the copper electrical strip.

  7. Insert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then press the ink cartridge forward until it latches into place.
      note:
    Install the color ink cartridge on the left and the black ink cartridge on the right.

  8. Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridge, if necessary
  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.

Try to print again. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Clean the electrical contacts
If the ink cartridge or carriage contacts are dirty, the printer might display an ink cartridge error. Unplug any cords, remove the battery and ink cartridges, and then clean the electrical contacts on ink cartridges and print carriage.
  1. Gather the following materials:
    • A clean, lint-free cloth
    • A clean, dry cotton swab
    • Distilled or bottled water
        caution:
      Do not use platen cleaners, tap water, or alcohol to clean the contacts. These can damage the ink cartridge or the printer.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  4. Disconnect any cords connected to the printer, such as the power cord and USB cable.
  5. Remove the battery cover. Push the battery cover tab to the right, and then pull the cover toward you.

  6. Push up on the battery latch, and then slide the battery out of its slot.

  7. To release the ink cartridge, lift the ink cartridge latch.

  8. Remove the ink cartridge from its slot.
      caution:
    Do not remove both ink cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each ink cartridge one at a time. Do not leave an ink cartridge outside the printer for more than 30 minutes.
  9. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides.

  10. Inspect the contacts for ink and debris buildup.
  11. Gently wipe the contacts with a dry swab or lint-free cloth until no ink or debris remains on the contacts.
      caution:
    Be careful to wipe only the contacts. Do not smear any ink or debris elsewhere on the ink cartridge.

  12. Lightly dampen a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then clean the copper-colored contacts.
  13. Dip another clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, squeeze out excess water, and then clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer.

  14. Wait 10 minutes for the ink cartridge and carriage contacts to dry before you continue.
  15. Insert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then press the ink cartridge forward until it latches into place.
      note:
    Install the color ink cartridge on the left and the black ink cartridge on the right.

  16. Repeat these steps to clean and reinsert the other ink cartridge.
  17. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  18. Slide the battery into its slot, and then press the left side of the battery until it clicks into place.

  19. Slide the battery cover into its slot, and then press the left side of the cover until it clicks into place.

  20. Reconnect the power cord or USB cable to the printer, if needed.
  21. Turn on the printer.
Try to print again. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 4: Remove and then reinsert the ink cartridges again
Repeat the steps you performed earlier in this document to remove and reinsert the ink cartridges.
  note:
Make sure the ink cartridges are latched firmly into place.
Try to print again. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 5: Clean the ink cartridge and carriage contacts again
Cleaning the ink cartridge and carriage contacts a second time can help resolve the issue. Repeat the steps that you performed earlier in this document to clean the contacts.
Try to print again. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 6: Reset the printer
Resetting the printer can resolve an ink cartridge error.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
      note:
    HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
    The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Try to print again. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 7: Install a new ink cartridge
Replace the ink cartridge indicated in the error message with a new genuine HP ink cartridge.
If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Make sure plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
  3. Open the ink cartridge access door.

  4. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  5. To release the ink cartridge, lift the ink cartridge latch.

  6. Remove the ink cartridge from its slot.
  7. Remove the replacement ink cartridge from its package. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the ink cartridge.

  8. Remove the plastic tape from the ink cartridge.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  9. Insert the new ink cartridge into its slot, and then press the ink cartridge forward until it latches into place.
      note:

  10. Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridge, if necessary
  11. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  12. The printer automatically aligns any newly installed ink cartridge.
    If the printer did not automatically align the ink cartridges, align the ink cartridges through the printer control panel:
    1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, use the arrow buttons to select Setup, and then press OK.
    2. Press the down arrow to select Tools, and then press OK.
    3. Press the down arrow to select Align Printer, and then press OK.
      Aligning... displays on the control panel. The printer might beep or make mechanical noises, and then the printer prints an alignment page.
Try to print again. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 8: Service the printer
If the previous steps did not resolve the ink cartridge error, service the printer.
Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
To see if your product is still under warranty, go to the warranty check website http://www.support.hp.com/checkwarranty. Contact HP Support to schedule a repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, Contact HP Support to find a local service center in your area.
