HP Tablets - Navigating the Tablet and Customizing the Home Screen (Android 5.0/Lollipop)

This document applies to HP and Compaq tablets with Android 5.0/Lollipop operating system.
The Home screen displays when you first turn on your tablet. From the Home screen, you can access all of your apps, widgets, settings, and everything else stored on your tablet. Customize your Home screen by changing the wallpaper, and adding apps and widgets for quick access.
Navigating the Home screen and apps
Use this section to learn how to navigate the tablet.
  • Tap the Home navigation button to go to the Home screen from any other screen. If you have more than one Home screen page, the Home button takes you to the leftmost page.
  • Tap the Back navigation button to return to the previous screen.
  • Tap the Recent apps navigation button to view a list of recently-used apps. Scroll through the list and tap to open an app. To remove an app from the Recent apps list, tap the app and drag the app off the edge of the tablet screen.
  • The number of dots on the Home screen tells you how many Home screen pages you have on the tablet. The dot for the page you are on displays slightly brighter than the rest. Swipe left to view the next Home screen page.
  • The Favorites tray displays at the bottom of each Home screen page to provide quick access to commonly used apps. Tap an icon in the favorites tray to open the corresponding app.
  • Tap the All apps icon to open a list of apps on the tablet. Then scroll through the apps and tap the app you want to open.

Adding and removing Home screen apps and widgets
Add, remove, and organize apps and widgets on the Home screen. Apps and widgets downloaded from the Google Play Store are automatically added to the Home screen (unless you changed the default settings in your Play Store account so icons are not added automatically). Pre-installed apps and widgets can also be added to the Home screen.
Making folders for apps and widgets
Use folders to group related apps or widgets together in one place on the Home screen. For example, you can create a folder containing different game apps.
  1. Create a folder by dragging an app or widget on top of another app or widget on the Home screen. You can also create folders in the Favorites tray for apps.
      note:
Widgets cannot be added to the Favorites tray.

  2. Tap a folder to open it. Then tap the app you want to use.
  3. To name a folder, tap the folder to open it. Then tap Unnamed Folder and enter the name you want.
  4. Tap a folder to open it. Then tap the app you want to use.
Adding and removing apps in the favorites tray
The favorites tray displays on each Home screen page to provide quick access to frequently used apps. The favorites tray is located at the bottom of the Home screen, on both sides of the All apps icon.
  note:
Widgets cannot be added to the favorites tray.

  • Add an app to the favorites tray: Locate the icon for the app you want to add to favorites. Tap and hold the app until the icon becomes larger and can be moved by dragging. Drag the icon into the favorites tray, then lift your finger from the screen.
The icon is added to the favorites tray.
  • Remove an app from the favorites tray: Tap and hold the app you want to remove from the favorites tray. When X Remove displays at the top of the screen, drag the icon to the top of the screen. When both the icon and X Remove turn red, lift your finger from the screen.
The app is removed from the favorites tray, but is not uninstalled from the tablet.
Adding, removing and organizing Home screen pages
Add and remove Home screen pages to organize your apps into convenient groups. For example, you can put all of your productivity apps on one Home screen page. Also rearrange Home screen pages to prioritize the order in which they display.
  • Add a Home screen page: Swipe to the rightmost screen and drag an app or widget to the right edge. A new page will display. Lift your finger from the screen. The app is added to the new Home screen page.
  • Remove a Home screen page: Drag all of the apps and widgets on a Home screen page to another page, and the empty Home screen page will automatically delete.
  • Rearrange Home screen pages: Tap and hold the screen until the Home screen pages display as rectangles. Then tap and hold a screen and drag it left or right to position it. Then lift your finger from the screen.
The leftmost screen displays whenever you tap the Home button.
Changing the wallpaper
