HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the System Board

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the system board for the HP Z420 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user must possess extensive product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and be familiar with the operating system.
Tools required
Torx-15 screwdriver

The replacement part number will vary depending on the system board that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the system board, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select System board from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
System board removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect all cables from the system board, noting their location for reinstallation.
  3. Remove the ten Torx-15 screws that secure the board to the chassis.
  4. Slide the system board toward the front of the chassis.
  5. Rotate the system board up and lift the board out of the chassis.
System board replacement
  1. Lower the board into the chassis and align it with the rear I/O panel ports.
  2. Slide the board against the rear I/O panel.
  3. Make sure the screw holes on the board are aligned with the mounting holes in the chassis.
  4. Replace the ten Torx-15 screws.
  5. Replace the first screw on one corner of the system board and then replace the second screw at the opposite corner.
  6. Replace the remaining eight screws. Reconnect all cables to the system board.

    After installing a new system board, be sure to update the BIOS to the latest revision or to the version requested by the end user.
