HP ProBook 6450b Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Switch Cover

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the switch cover for the HP ProBook 6450b Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Small, Phillips-head (P1 and P00) screwdrivers.
Parts required

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the switch cover that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Switch cover removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. On the bottom of the notebook, remove the three 3 mm P00 Phillips-head screws inside the battery bay that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  4. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the button board ZIF connector and disconnect the button board ribbon cable from the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  5. Moving from left to right, pull up on the rear edge of the switch cover to detach it from the base enclosure.
  6. Remove the switch cover from the base enclosure.
Switch cover replacement
  1. Toe the alignment tabs on the front edge of the switch cover into the slots on the top cover and lower the switch cover into position.
      caution:
    Make sure that the button board ribbon cable is free from being pinched between the switch cover and top cover.
  2. Press along the entire length of the switch cover to snap it into place.
  3. Insert the button board ribbon cable into the button board ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  4. Push the locking bar down to lock the button board ZIF connector.
  5. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  6. Replace the three 3 mm P00 Phillips-head screws inside the battery bay that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
