The Paper Jam Light Blinks on the HP Color LaserJet CP1215 and CP1217 Printers

Issue

The Jam light () on the control panel blinks. Paper might be jammed in the product. Paper jams can occur in three areas, as shown in the following illustration.

  1. Output tray
  2. Tray 1
  3. Fuser

Solution

Follow these steps to resolve the issue. It might not be necessary to complete all the steps.
note:
Paper jam messages can be true or false. The product might report a paper jam when there is not any paper jam. The following steps resolve both true and false paper jam messages.
  caution:
Paper jams might result in loose toner on the page. If you get any toner on your clothes, wash them in cold water. Hot water permanently sets the toner into the fabric.
Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams. Damage caused by sharp objects is not covered by the warranty.
When you remove jammed paper, pull it straight out of the product. Pulling jammed paper out at an angle can damage the product.

Step one: Remove any loose paper first

Remove all loose paper from tray 1 and the output tray.
  caution:
Do not try to remove jammed paper at this stage.

Step two: Clear the jam from the output tray

  1. With both hands, grasp the jammed paper where it is most visible, including the middle, and then carefully pull the paper straight out of the output tray.
    note:
    If the sheet tears, remove all fragments before you resume printing.

  2. Open and then close the rear door to clear the error light.

Step three: Clear the jam from tray 1 area

  1. Raise the jam access door, and then pull out tray 1.

  2. Check inside the product for jammed paper. With both hands, grasp the jammed paper where it is most visible, including the middle, and then carefully pull the paper straight out of the product.

  3. Reinstall tray 1, and then lower the jam access door.

  4. Press the Resume button () to continue printing.

Step four: Clear the jam from the fuser

  1. Open the rear door.

  2. With both hands, grasp the jammed paper where it is most visible, including the middle, and then carefully pull the paper straight out of the fuser area.

    note:

  3. Close the rear door.

Step five: Reset the printer

  1. Press the Power switch to turn off the product.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, and then press the Power switch to turn on the product.

Step six: Reload paper and try printing

  1. Pull out tray 1.
  2. Slide the paper length and width guides to their outermost positions.

  3. Tap a stack of plain, white paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
  4. Load the paper into tray 1 and make sure that it is flat at all four corners.
  5. Slide the paper length and width guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.

  6. Push the paper stack down to make sure that it is below the paper limit tabs on the side of the tray.

  7. Slide tray 1 into the product.

Step seven: Check print settings

Follow these steps to check and adjust print settings to match the loaded paper.
note:
The steps can vary depending on the software program.
  1. From the File menu in the software program, click Print.
  2. In the Print dialog box, click Properties.
  3. Check the settings on the Paper/Quality tab, change them if necessary, and then click OK.
  4. Try printing again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step eight: Clean the cartridge area

During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can accumulate inside the product and might cause paper jams. Follow these steps to clean the print cartridge area.
  1. Open Toolbox.
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click Toolbox.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click Toolbox.
  2. Click Help, and then click the Troubleshooting.
  3. In the Cleaning Mode area, click Start to begin the cleaning process.
    The product processes a single page, and then returns to the Ready state when the cleaning process ends.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step nine: Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.

Jam recovery

When the Jam Recovery feature is turned on, the product reprints any pages that are damaged during a jam.
Follow these steps to turn on the Jam Recovery feature.
  1. Open Toolbox.
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click Toolbox.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click Toolbox.
  2. Click the Device Settings folder, and then click System Setup.
  3. Next to Jam Recovery, click On from the drop-down list.

How to avoid paper jams

  • Do not overfill the input tray.
  • When you load new paper in the input tray, remove any paper that is already in the input tray, tap the stack of new paper on a flat surface to align the edges, and then load the new paper.
  • Adjust the paper width and length guides snugly against the paper.
  • Make sure that the input tray is securely in place.
  • Do not add or remove paper to or from the input tray while the product is printing.
  • Do not fan the paper before loading. Fanning causes static electricity, which makes the pages stick together.
  • Use only HP-recommended paper types and sizes.
  • Do not let paper stack up in the output tray. The paper type and the amount of toner usedaffect the output tray capacity.
  • Do not open the print cartridge door during a print job.
  • Make sure that the power cord is firmly connected to both the product and the power supply.
  • Do not print on paper that is damaged or has foreign objects attached to it, such as staples or paper clips.
  • Store the paper flat in its moisture proof wrapping in an environment that is not too humid or too dry.
