HP Deskjet F4200 All-in-One Printer Series - Alignment Page Does Not Print

Issue

The alignment page does not print as expected. This issue commonly occurs immediately after you install the product, however, it can occur at any time.
The following symptoms might also occur:
  • The message 'E' () displays or blinks on the control panel.
  • The light next to the Resume button () blinks.

note:

Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Check the product for packing materials or other debris, and then realign the product

If there is any material left inside the product such as packing material or other debris, the alignment fails and the alignment page does not print. Follow these steps to check the product for packing material or other debris, examine the cartridges, and then realign the product.

Step one: Check for any obstructions

Follow these steps to check for any obstructions in the product.
  1. Remove all the paper from the paper tray.
  2. Open the inner access door, and then remove any packing material or debris from inside the product.

  3. Close the inner access door.

Step two: Reload the paper tray

Follow these steps to reload paper into the paper tray.
  1. Gather 10-30 sheets of plain white paper to load into the product.
  2. Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
  3. Make sure the paper in the stack is:
    • The same size and type
    • Free from dust, wrinkles, tears, or folds
  4. Load the paper into the tray.

      caution:
    Do not force the stack of paper into the product or push it in too far.
  5. Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper. Make sure the stack of paper fits within the paper tray and is not higher than the top of the paper width guide.

Step three: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges

Follow these steps to remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges to realign the product.
  1. If the product is not on, press the power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product. Wait until the carriage stops moving and the product stops making noise before you continue.

  3. Press down on the top of the color cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. If the protective tape is still attached to the cartridge, hold the cartridge by its sides, and then pull the pink pull-tab on the cartridge to remove the tape.

  5. Hold the cartridge at a slight upward angle, insert it into its empty slot, and then gently push it forward until it snaps into place.

  6. Repeat these steps to remove, inspect, and reseat the black cartridge.
  7. Close the cartridge access door.

    The product automatically prints an alignment page when you reinsert the cartridges and close the cartridge access door.
    • If the alignment page prints successfully, you do not need to continue troubleshooting, but you must complete the alignment. Follow the printed steps on the alignment page to complete the alignment.
    • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution in this document.

Solution two: Finish the software installation and manually align the All-in-One

If you have not installed the product software, complete Step one: Finish the software installation. If you previously installed the product software, proceed to Step two: Align the product through the print driver.

Step one: Finish the software installation

Follow these steps to finish the software installation.
  1. Press the Cancel button () on the control panel to stop the alignment.
  2. Use one of the following methods to install the software.
    • Insert the software CD that shipped with the product. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    • Click here to download and install the latest version of the software. Click the model number for your product, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the software.
      note:
      Before clicking the link, bookmark this page in your Web browser. After you click the link and the software downloads and installs, use the bookmark to return to this page and proceed with the next step.

Step two: Align the product through the print driver

Follow these steps to manually align the product through the print driver.
  1. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
  2. In HP Solution Center, click Settings, click Print Settings, and then click Printer Toolbox. The printer Toolbox opens.
  3. On the Device Services tab, click Align the Print Cartridges. The product prints a cartridge alignment page.
  4. Lift the scanner lid.
  5. Place the alignment page on the front-right corner of the scanner glass with the print side down.
    note:

  6. Lower the scanner lid.
  7. Press the Scan button () on the control panel. The product aligns the cartridges.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Run the 'Paper Feed Cleaning' utility

Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers through the print driver.

Step one: Start the cleaning process

Follow these steps to start the cleaning process.
  1. Remove all paper from the paper tray.
  2. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
  3. In HP Solution Center, click Settings, click Print Settings, and then click Printer Toolbox. The printer Toolbox opens.
  4. On the Device Services tab, click Paper Feed Cleaning.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions on the Paper Feed Cleaning dialog box to complete the process.

Step two: Align the product through the print driver

Follow these steps to align the product through the print driver.
  1. Reload the stack of clean, plain white paper into the paper tray.
  2. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
  3. In HP Solution Center, click Settings, click Print Settings, and then click Printer Toolbox. The printer Toolbox opens.
  4. On the Device Services tab, click Align the Print Cartridges. The product prints a cartridge alignment page.
  5. Lift the scanner lid.
  6. Place the alignment page on the front-right corner of the scanner glass with the print side down.

  7. Lower the scanner lid.
  8. Press the Scan button () on the control panel. The product aligns the cartridges.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the All-in-One

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
