HP Designjet 700 Series Printers - Installing the Adobe (TM) PostScript (TM) Upgrade Kit

In the PostScript (R) Upgrade kit, you will find parts and instructions for adding Adobe (R) PostScript language support to the HP Designjet 700, 750C and 750C Plus printers. The kit is designed to be user-installable and requires no special training. The PostScript enhancement is provided on a ROM (read only memory) SIMM (single in-line memory module). PostScript requires at least 16 MB of additional memory, with 32 MB recommended; if you need to install more memory, now is a good time to do it.

Tools needed for installation

You will need to furnish the following tools for the installation of this kit:
  • A small flat blade screwdriver
  • Conductive wristband (if available)

Electrostatic discharge considerations

Integrated circuits (ICs) can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent damage to the printer circuits from high voltage electrostatic discharge, perform the following procedure:
  • Do not handle integrated circuits in carpeted areas.
  • Do not remove an IC from its conductive foam pad until you are ready to install it.
  • Ground your body when working on the printer by touching the printer’s metal enclosure just prior to handling the ROM SIMMs in the kit.
  • Set up the printer according to the instructions in the User’s Guide, then use the following instructions.

Installing the ROM SIMM

For installing the PostScript ROM SIMM, you will use the following steps to access the four installation slots for the modules:
  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Using a small flat blade screwdriver, remove the four screws that attach the small cover plate on the back of the printer and remove the cover plate.
  3. After removing the cover plate, you will see four slots.
The PostScript ROM SIMM must be installed in the second of the two slots when counting from left to right.
  4. Put on a conductive wristband (if available) and connect the other end to a good chassis ground on the printer or touch the outer metal surface of the printer.
  5. Holding the ROM SIMM module with the nonmetallic edge towards you and the notch at the bottom, turn it by about 45 degrees towards the right side of the printer and firmly push the metallic edge of the module into the slot. Keep the module pushed into the slot and gradually turn it to the left side of the printer until the two metal tabs, top and bottom, click and lock into place.
  6. Install the cover plate on the back of the printer.

Verifying PostScript ROM SIMM installation

Use the following procedure to verify proper installation of the ROM SIMM:
  1. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
  2. Press ENTER on the front panel.
  3. Using the arrow buttons, scroll to the Utilities menu. Press ENTER.
  4. Scroll to the Menumode submenu. Press ENTER.
  5. Select the Full menu mode. Press ENTER.
  6. Scroll to the Statistics menu.
  7. Press ENTER, then scroll until the display shows ROM SIMM = PostScript.
If ROM SIMM=None is displayed, the PostScript ROM SIMM is not correctly installed. Reseat the SIMM to ensure that it is correctly installed in the slot.
  8. Install the cover plate on the back of the printer.
  9. Installation is complete.
