Introduction

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer.

This video shows the HP ENVY 5530 printer, but the steps are the same for your printer.

Setting up the printer

Follow these steps in order.

Step one: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step two: Unpack the printer

  1. Remove the printer from the plastic covering, and then remove all the packing tape from the front and rear of the printer.
  2. Open the scanner lid, and then remove the plastic covering from the scanner lid.
  3. Open the cartridge access door, and then remove all of the tape and packing materialfrom inside the printer.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. Close the scanner lid.
  6. Open the paper tray door, pull it toward you to extend the paper tray, and then remove the packing tape.
  7. Push the paper tray forward until it clicks into place, and then close the paper tray door.
  8. Recycle the packing materials.

Step three: Turn on the power

Important: Your printer might have a protective plastic sticker that looks like an active printer control panel. Remove the sticker from the control panel before you continue with this step.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then connect the other end of the cord to the electrical outlet.

  2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue to the next step.

Step four: Select the language and country/region

The first time you turn on the printer, it prompts you to select your language and region. Follow these steps to set the default language and country/region for your printer.
  1. On the printer control panel, touch the desired language, and then touch Yes to confirm your choice. If you do not see the desired language, touch the Down Arrow () to scroll through the menu.
  2. Touch the desired country/region, and then touch Yes to confirm your choice.
  3. Touch Setup, and then continue to the next step.

Step five: Insert the cartridges

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.
  2. Open the scanner lid.
  3. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the access area. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  5. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pull tab to remove the plastic tape.

  6. Hold the cartridge at a slight upward angle with the cartridge contacts facing the rear of the printer, and then slide the cartridge into the empty slot.
    Make sure that the color of the cartridge matches the color on the cartridge latch.
    • The tri-color cartridge goes in the slot on the left.
    • The black cartridge goes in the slot on the right.

  7. Close the cartridge lid to secure the cartridge.

  8. Repeat these steps to insert the other cartridge.
  9. Close the cartridge access door.

  10. Close the scanner lid. The printer prompts you to load paper in the paper tray.

Step six: Load paper and align the cartridges

Follow these steps to load U.S. letter or A4 plain, white paper in the paper tray.
  1. Open the paper tray door.
  2. Grasp the door, and then pull it toward you to extend the paper tray.
  3. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost positions.

  4. Load a stack of U.S. letter or A4 plain, white paper into the tray with the short edge facing toward the printer and the print side down. Push the stack into the tray until it stops.

  5. Slide the paper width guides in until they rest against the edges of the paper, and then slide the paper tray back into the printer until it stops.

  6. Pull the paper tray extender toward you, and then lift up the end.

  7. Touch OK, and then follow the instructions on the control panel to start the cartridge alignment. The printer aligns the cartridges and prints an alignment page.
  8. Follow the steps on the alignment page to finish aligning the cartridges.

Step seven: Connect the printer

On the printer control panel, from the Setup Wireless Connection menu, select the connection option that you want to use, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer. The following list might help you decide which option to select:
  • Via Software (recommended): Select this option to connect the printer to your wireless network using the software CD that shipped with your printer. With this option you can go online to check for the latest software and to register an HP ePrint service account (Internet connection required). If you do not want to go online, you can use the basic CD installation to install and connect the printer.
  • Via Printer: Select this option to connect the printer using the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer control panel. With this option you manually connect the printer to your network. Once connected, insert the software CD to install the software.
  • Not Now: Select this option if you do not want to connect the printer now, or if you want to connect the printer via USB. Insert the software CD into your computer. Do not connect the USB cable to the computer until prompted to do so during the software installation.
