Troubleshooting a chronic paper jam

Try the solutions listed below if you frequently experience paper jams. Solutions are listed in order, with the most likely solution first. If the first solution does not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining solutions until the issue is resolved.
Solution 1: Check for common "Paper Jam" causes
  1. Verify that you have already tried the solutions listed below. If you need more details, scroll back up to the top of the page, and then choose the This is my first time / it happens occasionally option.
    • Clear the jammed paper. (For details, see the printer Help.)
    • Verify that the cleanout door is securely installed.
    • Verify that paper is properly loaded in the input tray.
Solution 2: Check for torn paper or debris
  1. Remove all paper from the input tray.
  2. Make sure the output tray is open, and then pull down the cartridge door to open it.
  3. Use a flashlight to check inside the printer for any torn pieces of paper or foreign objects and remove them, if possible.
  4. If you can't reach all of the debris, or you can't remove it easily, follow these steps:
    1. While the printer is still on, disconnect the power cord, preferably at the wall.
Leave the output tray down and the cartridge door open so that you can observe the printer after you restore power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then plug in the power cord.
Observe the front access area while the printer starts up. The paper feed rollers will turn and may dislodge some of the pieces of paper, or at least show you where there may be some debris.
If the printer does not turn on automatically, press the Power button.
        warning:
Do not put hands, tools, or other objects in the printer while it restarts. This could cause damage.
  5. If you were able to clear the debris, load paper in the input tray and try using your printer again.
Solution 3: Check the quality of the paper in the input tray
  1. Make sure that the paper is flat in the tray.
  2. Check the edges for dirt, rips, tears, curls, or wrinkles.
  3. Remove any blemished or damaged paper and reload the tray, then try using the printer again.
  4. To help prevent paper jams, follow these guidelines:
    • Adjust the paper-width guide in the input tray to fit snugly against all paper. Make sure the paper-width guide does not bend the paper in the input tray.
    • Remove printed papers from the output tray frequently.
    • Do not force paper too far forward in the input tray.
    • Do not put too much paper in the input tray. Overloading the tray can lead to jams.
    • Avoid paper that is too thin or too thick, that has a slick texture, or that stretches easily. These types of paper can feed incorrectly through the paper path and cause paper jams.
    • Store photo media in its original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat surface in a cool, dry place. When you are ready to print, remove only the paper you plan to use immediately. When you have finished printing, return any unused photo paper to the plastic bag.
    • Do not leave unused photo paper in the input tray. The paper might start to curl, which might reduce the quality of your printouts. Curled paper can also cause paper jams.
    • Do not combine different paper types and paper sizes in the input tray; the entire stack of paper in the input tray must be the same size and type.
    • Avoid envelopes with clasps or windows. They can get stuck in the rollers and cause paper jams. Also, it's a good idea to tuck the flap inside each envelope to avoid a jam.
    • If you are printing labels, ensure that the label sheets are no more than two years old. Labels on older sheets might peel off when the paper is pulled through the printer, causing a paper jam.
    • Use paper types that are recommended for the printer.
Solution 4: Adjust the paper stack
  1. Change the amount of paper in the stack.
For example, if there is a small amount of paper in the stack, increase the number of pages. If the stack is very large, remove some of the pages.
  2. Tap the edges on a flat surface to align the edges, and then reload the paper.
  3. Try using your printer again.
  4. If you're still having a problem, follow these steps:
    1. Remove the paper stack and fan the pages to release any static.
Turn the paper stack 180 degrees, and then tap the edges on a flat surface to align the edges.
      Reload the paper.
      Try using your printer again.
