DESCRIPTION
HP Z Series Workstations - Windows XP Professional Edition may hang during reboot or shutdown
Symptoms:
When initiating a restart or shutdown event on a workstation with more than eight cores running Windows XP Professional, the operating system may hang. This issue does not occur when using the HP supplied Windows XP Professional image or recovery media.
For Z400, this error may occur if a 6-core processor is installed and Hyper-Threading is enabled.
For Z600 and Z800, this error may occur if two 6-core processors are installed, or if two quad-core processors are installed and Hyper-Threading is enabled.

SCOPE
Information in this document applies to the listed systems configured as follows:

RESOLUTION
If this error occurs while installing Windows XP Professional Edition, change the option in F10 Setup to only enable two cores. Use the following procedure to complete this task:
  • Power on the workstation
  • During POST press the F10 key
  • Navigate to the 'Advanced' Menu
  • Navigate to the 'Processors' sub-menu
  • Change the setting for 'Active Cores' to '2'
  • Press F10 to save the settings for the 'Active Cores' options
  • Press F10 to exit F10 setup
After installation completes, change the 'Active Cores' setting back to 'All Cores.' To prevent this error from occurring after setup completes, install Microsoft QFE KB958211. A link to this QFE is available at the HP Business Support Center.
