HP Officejet K7100, K7103, and K7108 Printer Series - Setting Up a New Printer


This document describes how to set up the printer.

Setting up a new product

Follow the given steps to set up the new printer:

Step one: Unpack the printer

Remove all the tape and packing material from the outside and the inside of the printer.

Remove the tape and cardboard packaging from inside and around the printer.

Step two: Check the contents of the box

The contents may vary by country/region. Refer to the packaging for the actual contents.

Step three: Install optional accessories

The duplex unit is an optional accessory that is available for the HP Officejet K7100 series printer. Follow the given steps to install the duplex unit:
  1. Remove the rear access panel by pushing the release buttons toward each other.
  2. Pull the rear access panel out of the printer.

  3. Insert the duplex unit straight into the back of the printer until both sides snap into place.

Step four: Connect the power cord

  1. Connect the power cord to the printer.
    Windows users: Wait to connect the USB cable until you are prompted during software installation. Standard USB cable can be purchased from any reputable dealer.
  2. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.

Step five: Turn on the printer

Press the Power button () to turn on the printer.

Step six: Load plain paper

Follow these steps to load plain paper in the main tray.
  1. Raise the output tray. If the output tray is extended, close the tray.
  2. Press the input tray lock and extend the input tray.
    If the small paper guide is in its open position, close it by moving it 90° counterclockwise.
  3. Press the button on top of the paper-width guide and slide the guide to the left to its outermost position.

  4. Insert up to 150 sheets of paper, or a stack of paper that does not exceed the height of the paper-width guide, print side down along the right side of the input tray until it stops.

  5. Press the button on top of the paper-width guide, and slide the guide to the right until it stops at the edge of the stack.
  6. Press the input tray lock, and push the tray in until it stops at the edge of the stack.
    When 215.9 x 279.4 mm (8.5 x 11 inch) paper is loaded in the input tray, the tray extension closes to the edge of the paper and leave a slight gap between the extension and the tray. The tray extends further to accommodate larger-sized paper.

  7. Lower the output tray.
  8. Extend the output tray if necessary.

Step seven: Install the print cartridges

  1. Make sure that the printer is turned on.
  2. Open the top cover, and lift the print latch.
    The print cartridge carriage may be moving into its correct position. Be sure the print cartridge carriage is parked at the right-hand side of the printer before removing or installing print cartridges.

  3. If you are installing a new print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from its package, and then remove the nozzle protective tape by pulling on the pink pull-tab.
    To prevent clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections, do not touch the print cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts, and do not remove the copper contacts.

  4. Hold the print cartridge with the copper contacts facing the printer, and then slide the print cartridge into the cradle.
    Depending on the cartridge size, they may not align with each other.
    If you have trouble inserting the print cartridge after lifting the carriage latch, verify the printer is on and wait a few seconds for the carriage to disengage before inserting the print cartridge.

  5. Push down on the print cartridge latch until it snaps closed. Make sure the latch does not spring back open.

  6. Close the top cover.

Step eight: Align the print cartridges

After you install a new print cartridge, the printer will automatically align the print cartridges and use one sheet of paper to print an alignment page.

Step nine: Install the software

Insert the HP CD-ROM into your computer’s CD-ROM drive, and follow the onscreen instructions to install the software.
