HP Photosmart A712, A716, and A717 Photo Printers - Blinking Lights

Introduction
The lights on the HP Photosmart photo printer flash or blink, when the printer is initializing, or when the battery is charging. Some flashing or blinking lights can indicate a possible issue with the printer. This document lists steps to correct those issues.
Blinking Lights
Issue
The Attention light is flashing red.

Solution
When the Attention light is flashing red the printer requires attention. Ensure the following items are addressed to resolve the issue.
  • If the printer is connected to the camera, check the image display for instructions.
  • If the printer is connected to a computer, check the computer screen for instructions.
  • Turn the printer off.
    • Follow these steps if the optional HP Photosmart Internal Battery is not installed in the printer.
      1. Unplug the printer power cord.
      2. Wait 30 seconds.
      3. Plug the power cord back in, and then turn the printer on.
    • Follow these steps if the optional HP Photosmart Internal Battery is installed in the printer.
      1. Unplug the printer power cord if it is plugged in.
      2. Open the battery compartment cover and remove the battery.
          caution:
        Do not touch the contacts inside the printer or on the battery.
      3. Wait 10 seconds, and then reinstall the battery.
      4. Plug in the power cord, and then turn the printer on.
Issue
The On light is flashing green, but the printer is not printing.

Solution
  • If the printer is turned on, it is initializing. Wait for it to finish.
  • If the printer is turned off, and the optional HP Photosmart Internal Battery is installed, the printer is charging the battery.

If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.
Check your product warranty to determine if your product is still under warranty, and then go to Contact HP Support to schedule a repair or replacement.
Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
