HP Notebook PCs - Fatal Exception Errors During Image Load Process

Description

Fatal Exception, or blue screen, errors, occur when you load an image on your notebook PC. This occurs during the reboots following the creation of a partition.
This behavior occurs on nc6120 and nx6120 notebook PCs with a Hitachi 60GB hard disk. The installation procedure works without issue on units with a Fujitsu hard drive.
Some applications are not compatible with Intel Execution (also known as HW DEP) and may cause Windows crashes or fatal exception errors on bootup.

Solution

Disable Intel Execution in the system BIOS:
  1. Tap the F10 key during boot to enter the system BIOS.
  2. In Computer Setup, use the arrow keys to select the Advanced choice.
  3. Select Device Options under the Advanced menu.
  4. Select Intel Execution Disable. Change this setting to Disable.
  5. Press F10 to exit this menu.
  6. Select the File menu.
  7. Select Save Changes and Exit. Press Enter to exit Setup and save the changes.
  8. For the prompt Are you sure you want to save changes and exit? Press F10 for yes.
After rebooting, the fatal exceptions should no longer occur.

A good first step troubleshooting a system with a blue screen on boot for newer notebooks with newer processors is to disable Intel Execution.
Some common applications we have seen before include older versions of Blackice (Version 7.0 and 3.6). Version 8.0 does not have this problem.
