HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series Printers - Ink System Error Messages

Information
This document contains information about errors that are related directly to Printhead issues. If experiencing ink cartridge error messages, use document titled: HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series - Ink System Cartridge Error Messages.
Status messages
The messages in Table 1 provide only an action to perform:
Status
Description
Procedure
OK
The ink system is working correctly.
None
Insert
There is no Ink Cartridge or printhead installed.
Insert the correct part. If the part is installed correctly, make sure the Carriage Tube Connector is correctly connected to the Carriage.
Setup
Setup appears when new tubes have been installed, and the correct setup printheads have been installed.
When the tube system setup is complete, the front panel displays a message, (XX04) Replace. Remove the setup printheads and to replace them with “normal printheads.”
Low
Ink Cartridge Level has reached its low limit (100 ml). This is an early warning.
Obtain new supplies, and replace the particular color when required.
Very Low
Ink Cartridge level has reached its very low limit (50 ml).
Avoid overnight printing or priming the ink tubes. We strongly recommend inserting a new Ink Cartridge to prevent the printer from interrupting a print job.
Empty
The Printer stops when the Ink Cartridge is empty.
A new Ink Cartridge is required. Check image quality of prints in progress.
Error status messages
Error status messages consist of the HP Status code and the action message. Tables 2a and 2b group error messages according to the part, the action message (for example, all Replace errors are grouped together), and then the status number (for example, the last two digits).
The first digit of the HP ID code, as shown in Table 2a, identifies the part and provides specific information.

Printhead errors (first digit = 0, 1, 4, 5)
Consider the following possibilities when receiving printhead errors:
  • If printer requests printhead replacement too frequently, print the diagnostic print page and check the printhead nozzle status.
  • Do not touch, wipe, or attempt to clean the printhead nozzles. Doing so can damage the printhead and reduce print quality.
When replacing printheads, perform the following tasks:
  1. Verify that printhead is the correct model.
  2. Verify that the printhead color is correct for the slot.
  3. Remove the protective cap from the printhead before installing it.
  4. Check the empty slots to see if they need cleaning.
      note:
In extreme circumstances, the printer may not recognize the new printhead because of build-up on the electrical connection between the printhead and the printhead Carriage.
If all six printheads present the same error message, check the following items:
  1. Verify that all the installed printheads are the correct type. Check the following printhead characteristics:
    • Model number
    • Printhead type (for example, Setup printheads instead of normal)
  2. Try replacing or reseating each printhead, one at a time.

XX20 Recover
The Printhead has detected nozzle failure
Perform one of the following actions:
1. Continue using the printhead, unless the (XX21) Replace message is displayed (the effect on print quality depends on the print mode).
2. Perform the Recovery procedure.
The printhead has detected a significant number of bad nozzles that affects print quality.
Select YES to replace printheads or select NO to finish print job without the failed printhead (print quality is affected).
The message will be displayed for every print job until the printhead is replaced.
1. Attempt the Recovery procedure.
2. If the message persists, replace the printhead(s).
Printhead recovery procedure
The Printer regularly performs a series of diagnostics to verify the status of the printheads, and when they start to degrade, the Printer will prompt the user to recover the printhead [(XX20) RECOVER].
At this stage, the user should obtain new printheads. Depending on the print mode being used (Max. Quality, Productivity, or Max. Speed), the printer may still be able to print with an acceptable print quality.
If the printer is printing a job and the printhead degrades to a significant degree [(XX16) and (XX17) REPLACE], the front panel will display the following warning:
Warning! Printhead quality degrading. Select YES to replace failing printheads.
YES (Replace)
NO (Continue)
Press the UP or DOWN arrow key to select YES or NO, then press the ENTER key. If YES is selected, the print job will be canceled and printhead replacement will be started. If NO is selected, the printer will finish the current print job.
  note:
This message will be displayed each time a print job is sent to the printer until the failing printhead(s) are replaced.
  caution:
If NO is selected, the printer finishes the current print job without using the failed printhead (that is, without using that color).
Printhead cleaner errors (first digit = A or *)
When replacing printhead cleaners, perform the following tasks:
  1. Ensure that the printhead cleaner is the correct type.
  2. Ensure that the printhead cleaner is the correct color for that slot.
  3. Ensure that the printhead cleaner is the correct orientation.
If all six printhead cleaners present the same error message, check the following items:
  1. Verify that all installed printhead cleaners are the correct type. (For example, verify model number, approved replacement, and so on.)
  2. Replace printhead cleaners when printheads are replaced.
      note:
The message status for printhead cleaners will not change until the door is closed. No sensor detects removal and insertion.

  • Ensure that printhead cleaner was replaced together with the printhead.
