HP and Compaq PCs - A Printer, Scanner, or other Hardware Device is not Available in a Windows XP User Account

This information applies to HP and Compaq computers with Windows XP.
A device is installed in an account other than the main account. This results in software that does not appear or is unusable in other accounts.
Perform the following steps to make the software available for all users on the computer:
  1. Log onto the account name that installed the device's software.
  2. Uninstall the device's software. Refer to the device's help material if you do not know how to uninstall the software.
  3. Log off the account and restart the computer.
  4. After Windows XP opens, log onto the account that installed Windows (the account with administrative privileges).
  5. Install the software for the device.
  6. The device is now available for use on all accounts on the computer. If accounts other than the main account are still unable to use the device, the privileges for the device need to be changed (Only in Windows XP Pro and Media Center Edition).
