Preventing Paper Jams for the HP Deskjet 3810 and 3820 Series Printers


Paper jams can be caused by mechanical failures of the printer, the type of paper (including transparencies, labels or other printable media), or how the paper is loaded. Most jams are avoidable. If your printer has a recurring paper jam, review the following suggestions.

Mechanical/printer issues

Broken, missing, or improperly installed parts may cause your printer to jam. Review the parts listed below for mechanical problems.

Kicker feet

The kicker feet (see Figure 1) are the three narrow plastic pieces located just above the end of the paper tray that push the paper out of the printer after printing is finished. If one, or more, of these is broken, the paper might not fully eject, and subsequent pages can get jammed in the front of the printer. If the kicker feet on your printer are broken, service the printer.

The wings (see Figure 2), or flaps, are the plastic pieces that guide the paper out of the printer and into the Out tray. If the wings get stuck in the wrong position, the paper can get jammed in the front of the printer. They should be in the “up” position when printing and in the “down” position when the paper is ejecting into the Out tray or when the printer is at rest (see Figure 2). If the wings are not moving correctly, they may be stuck. Gently wiggle the wings to reset them in the correct position. The wings should move freely and then lightly spring back into the “down” position.

The rear access door

If the rear access door is damaged or incorrectly installed, paper may jam in the printer.

Paper scraps or labels are stuck inside

The paper passes by the rear access door during printing. Paper scraps or labels stuck inside the rear access door may prevent the paper from properly passing through. Remove the rear access door and remove any paper scraps or stuck labels.

One or more of the roller wheels is missing or broken

The rear access door (see Figure 3) has six roller wheels. If any wheels are missing or if the wheels do not turn freely, paper can jam. The rear access door should be replaced or repaired. Service the printer if all the wheels are not in place or do not turn freely.

Width and length guides

Slide the paper width guide and paper length guide firmly against the media. This will prevent the media from skewing or jamming in the mechanism.

Paper issues

Sometimes the paper can cause the jam. The information in the section below explains the most common paper issues that can cause paper jams.

The amount of paper in the tray

  • If there are only one or two sheets of paper in the tray, add paper. The capacity of the In tray is 100 sheets.
  • Do not fill the tray above the top of the length adjuster.

The types, sizes, and weights of the paper

  • Place only one type of paper in the In tray at a time.

  • Banner printing is not supported


  • Use only supported envelopes. Click here for supported envelopes (bud09332) (in English).
  • When printing envelopes, tuck the flap inside the envelope.
  • Print single envelopes with the envelope slot.
  • Print multiple envelopes in the In tray.


  • Try printing only full sheets of labels. Label sheets with several labels already removed are difficult to feed.
  • Do not print labels that are curling on the edges.

Paper loading and selection

  • Prior to placing the paper in the In tray, fan the paper. Fanning the paper will ensure that the pages are not stuck together. The pages should feed into the printer one page at a time.
  • Add paper to the In tray only when the printer is not printing. Adding paper while printing can cause paper jams. Do not overfill the In tray.
  • The paper should be in good condition. Paper that is dog-eared, torn, or for any other reason not in good condition, should not be used.
  • Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types of paper.
  • If you suspect the paper to be the cause for the paper jam, try another type of paper. Use only supported paper, click here for supported paper (bud09332) (in English).
  • Slide the paper width guide and paper length guide firmly against the media. This will prevent the media from skewing or jamming in the mechanism.

Other possible issues

Print quality mode

The printer will pick paper and eject it into the Out tray most reliably while printing in Normal or Best mode.

The tray extender

Do not use the Out tray extension when printing on legal-size paper.
