HP Designjet 500 and 800 Series Printers - The Front Panel Displays an X When Upgrading Firmware

Issue:
A failed firmware upgrade, through the System Maintenance Utility, is denoted by the appearance of an “X” superimposed over a line drawing of the printer, on the front panel display.
Workaround
Copy a firmware upgrade to the printer using a DOS copy command communicating through a parallel cable.
  1. Connect to the printer using a parallel cable. The “X” will remain superimposed over the line drawing of the printer on the front panel display and will remain until the System Software (firmware) is downloaded correctly.
  2. Find the System Software Upgrade files (.fmw). The default directory is C:
    1. Select Program Files, Hewlett-Packard, then HP Designjet System Maintenance.
    2. Copy the .FMW files to the root directory of the C: (Depending on the version of Windows running, it may be necessary to rename these files to accommodate fewer digits. For example, rename DJ500HPGL_Axxxx.FMW as HPGL.FMW or, DJ800DISK_Axxxx.FMW as DISK.FMW).
  3. To open a DOS command prompt, click Start, Programs, Command Prompt.
    note:
The series and model of printer will determine which files are chosen and copied with the DOS copy command. If the file names were changed to copy the files to the root directory of the C drive, make sure the name change is reflected in the DOS copy command.
HP Designjet 500 series
  1. Make sure the current location is the root directory of the C drive. If the current location is in a subdirectory of the C drive, type CD:\ and press Enter.
  2. Send engine code image by typing: copy /b DJ500_Axxxx.FMW LPT1, or current file name, and press Enter.
An image of the printer, with an arrow pointing to the control panel, along with a column of scrolling zeros and ones, will appear on the front panel display for a short period. Then, an image of an hourglass, followed by an image of the printer showing a power cord, and an arrow pointing away from the wall, will display.
  3. Send formatter code image (only when HP-GL/2 Accessory Card is available) by typing: copy /b DJ500HPGL_Axxxx.FMW LPT1, or current file name and press Enter.
The actual values of “xxxx” will correspond to the current version of firmware (for example: DJ500_A0210.FMW). The printer front panel will display FMTRUPGRADE and PROCESSING during the upgrade, then will display READY when complete.
  4. Remove the power cord from the back of the printer and wait at least 30 seconds.
    note:
Do not turn the power off with the power switch.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the printer and allow printer to initialize.
    note:
Do not turn power off, or unplug the printer until front panel display prompts to do so.
HP Designjet 800 series
  1. Make sure the current location is the root directory of the C drive. If current location is in a subdirectory or the C drive, type CD:\ and press Enter.
  2. Send engine code image by typing: copy /b DJ500_Axxxx.FMW LPT1, or current file name and press Enter.
An image of the printer, with an arrow pointing to the control panel, along with a column of scrolling zeros and ones, will appear on the front panel display for about a minute. Then, an image of an hourglass, followed by an image of the printer showing a power cord, and an arrow pointing away from the wall, will appear.
    note:
If the DOS screen hangs, the connection to the port is still active. Close and reopen the command prompt screen to allow the port connection to close, and resend the engine code.
  3. Send hard disk image by typing: copy /b DJ800DISK_Axxxx.FMW LPT1, or current file name and press Enter.
The actual values of “xxxx” will correspond to the current version of firmware. For example: DJ800DISK_A0210.FMW). The printer front panel will display the message Upgrading to. Once the hard disk image is upgraded, the printer will return to a “Ready” state.
  4. Send the formatter code image by typing: copy /b DJ800PS_Axxxx.FMW LPT1, or current file name and press Enter.
The printer front panel will display FMTRUPGRADE and PROCESSING during the upgrade, then will display READY when complete.
  5. Remove the power cord from the back of the printer and wait at least 30 seconds.
    note:
Do not turn the power off with the power switch.
  6. Replace the power cord. The printer will re-initialize.
    note:
Do not turn power off, or unplug the printer, until the front panel display prompts to do so.
