HP Color LaserJet Pro M280 printers - Paper jam error

When you try to print, an error message on the printer control panel prompts you to clear jammed paper from one or more areas of the printer.

  • Jam in output bin. Open rear door and clear jam.

  • Check single sheet slot for jam or close tray 2.

  • Jam in print paper path. Open tray 2 and rear door.

  • Remove paper from document feeder. Press [OK] to clear message.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Clear the jam

Remove jammed paper from the area shown in the error message.

If the error persists after checking and clearing the areas in the error message, check for jams in other areas of the printer.

Clear the single sheet slot and Tray 2

Remove any jammed paper from Tray 2 and the single sheet input area (Tray 1).

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

  2. Pull Tray 2 completely out of the printer.

  3. Look inside the printer for jammed paper or debris, and then use both hands to remove any that you find.

  4. If no jammed paper is visible or if the jammed paper is deep enough in the Tray 2 area that it is difficult to remove, press down on the feed slot tray, and then pull it out of the printer.

  5. Remove any jammed paper or debris.

  6. Reinsert the feed slot tray into the printer.

  7. Reinsert Tray 2 into the printer.

  8. Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clear the print paper path and output bin

Remove any jammed paper from the output bin, fuser area, and duplexer on the back of the printer.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

  2. Open the rear door.

  3. Use both hands to remove any jammed paper or objects from the output bin.

  4. Look inside the printer for jammed paper or debris, and then use both hands to remove any that you find.

    Warning:

    The fuser is located above the rear door and it might be hot. Wait until the fuser is cool before you reach inside the printer.

  5. Close the rear door.

  6. Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clear the document feeder

Look for and remove jammed paper from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and scanner area.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

  2. Open the ADF cover.

  3. Look for jammed paper or debris, and then use both hands to remove any that you find.

  5. Lift the ADF input tray to access the ADF output tray, and then remove any jammed paper from the output area.

  6. Open the scanner lid, and then remove any jammed paper from under the ADF.

  7. Close the scanner lid.

  8. Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  4. Wait 60 seconds.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    Note:

    HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  6. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
