HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M182-M183 Printers - 'Load Paper' Displays, Printer Does Not Pick Paper

This document is for HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M182n, M182nw, and M183fw printers.

During a print, copy, or scan job, the printer does not feed paper from the input tray or automatic document feeder (ADF). The printer might make noises as though it is printing, but no paper moves through it. One of the following messages might display, depending on your printer.

The Attention light and an Er/03 error message displays on the printer control panel.
A Load Paper or Document feeder mispick. Reload. message displays on the printer control panel.

Printer does not pick up paper from the input tray

When the printer does not pick up paper, reload the paper, check the print settings, and then clean the paper pick rollers to resolve the issue.

Step 1: Check the paper, and then reload it

Paper feed issues might result from using ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper. The quality of the paper can also make a difference. Use these guidelines to help avoid the issue.

Use only good quality paper that meets printer specifications.
Store all paper in a dry, cool place. Paper feed issues occur more often in humid environments.
Do not print on paper that is already printed. The dampness of the ink can cause the paper to stick together.
Wait for the printer to complete a job or for an Out of paper or Load Paper message to display before you reload the paper.

Make sure the paper you are using is in good condition, it is stacked neatly in the tray, and the paper path and tray are free from obstructions.

Make sure the paper is in good condition. Remove any severely bent, wrinkled, or torn paper from the stack.
Holding the paper stack in both hands, flex the stack to form a U shape, and then flex the stack in the opposite direction.

This action can loosen stuck paper sheets.
Pull out the input tray, and then slide out the paper width guides as far as possible. When you are loading legal-size paper, extend the input tray.
Load up to 150 sheets of paper with the print side facing up and the top edge toward the printer. If you are loading pre-punched paper, load the paper with the holes toward the left side of the tray.
Slide in the paper guides until they touch the edges of the stack of paper.
Close the input tray.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Check the print settings

Check the print settings to make sure that they are appropriate for your print job.

Check print settings using HP Smart app

Print a photo or document saved on your Windows or Mac computer.

Open the HP Smart app, and then click Print Documents or Print Photos.
Browse to the document or photo, and then click Print.

The Print window opens.
Depending on your print job, you might consider modifying the following settings:
- Media Type: Select the appropriate type of paper, such as photo paper, plain paper, or labels.
- Quality: Increase the print quality from Normal or Draft mode to Best.
- Paper Size: Select the correct paper size for your print job.
Click Print.

Check print settings (Windows)

Check the print settings for your print job in Windows.

In the software application you are trying to print from, click File, and then click Print.

The Print window opens.
Open the Properties dialog box.

Depending on the software application, the button might be Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
Depending on your print job, you might consider modifying the following settings:
- Paper Type: If you are printing on photo paper, select the type of photo paper you are attempting to print on.
- Print Quality: If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, increase the print quality. To print more quickly, decrease the print quality. These options typically include Best, Normal, and Draft modes.
- Paper Size: If you are printing on a different size of paper than you normally print on, select the correct paper size.
- Black and White: If you want to print in black and white only, select the grayscale option.
After selecting the print settings, click OK to apply the settings, and then click Print.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Print a cleaning page

The printing mechanism and printing path inside the printer might need to be cleaned to resolve issues like repeating dots, fuzzy print, or smeared toner.

Print a cleaning page using the HP Smart app

Print a cleaning page from your Windows or Mac computer.

Open the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings, and then click Print Quality Tools.
In Clean printhead, click ABC to start the print job.

Print a cleaning page from HP Printer Assistant

Open HP Printer Assistant, and then print a cleaning page.

Load plain paper into the input tray, and then turn on the printer, if it is not on already.
Search Windows for HP, and then click your printer name from the list of results.

HP Printer Assistant opens.
Click Print, and then click HP Device Toolbox.
Click the System tab, and then select Service.
In the Cleaning Mode area, click Start to begin the cleaning process.

Print a cleaning page from printers with a 2-line display

Print a cleaning page to resolve issue like fuzzy print or loose, smeared toner.

Load plain paper into the input tray, and then turn on the printer, if it is not on already.
From the printer control panel, press the Setup button .
Press the right arrow button to scroll to Service, and then press OK.
Press the right arrow button to scroll to Cleaning Page, and then press OK.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Reset the printer

Sometimes an error persists even though there is no paper feed issue. Reset the printer, and then try to print.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Step 5: Clean the pickup roller

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pickup roller and cause paper feed issues. Clean the pickup roller inside the printer, and then try to print again.

Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord and any other cables from the rear of the printer.
Wait for the printer to cool, and then remove the input tray.
Turn the printer on its side to access its underside (base), and then find the pickup roller.
Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the pickup roller, and then rotate it upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
Allow the pickup roller to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).
Set the printer upright, and then insert and close the input tray.
Reconnect the power cord and any other cables to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 6: Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.

Printer does not pick up paper from the ADF

When the printer does not pick up paper from the ADF, clean the paper pick rollers and separator pad, and then reset the printer to resolve the issue.

Step 1: Clean the ADF rollers and the separator pad

Dust or paper residue on the rollers or separator pad inside the automatic document feeder (ADF) can result in paper feed issues. Open the ADF, and then clean the ADF rollers and separator pad.

Remove the original document from the ADF.
Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord and any other cables from the rear of the printer.
Open the ADF cover.
Find the paper pick rollers and the separator pad inside the ADF.
Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off the paper pick rollers and the separator pad.
Leave the ADF cover open to allow the paper pick rollers and separator pad to dry (approximately 10 minutes).
Close the ADF cover.
Reload the original document print side up in the document feeder tray. Gently slide the document into the printer as far as it can go.

note:
Do not load more than 35 pages in the ADF. Larger stacks of paper can lead to pick problems.
Slide in the paper width guides until they are snug against the paper. Do not push the paper width guides in so far that they bend the paper.
Reconnect the power cord and any other cables to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to scan or copy. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the printer

Sometimes an error persists even though there is no paper feed issue. Reset the printer, and then try to print.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

Try to scan or copy again. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.
