HP Designjet H-Series - Many Simultaneous Error Codes/Attentions/Other Messages About Different Carriage Components

Issue

The printer displays many numerical error codes, actions, warnings, or other messages on the control panel about different components on the carriage, such as the UV lamps, Ink System, Printheads, and/or camera. The problem may be intermittent at first, and may sometimes be cleared by restarting the printer, but gradually it gets worse until the printer can no longer be used. The messages on the control panel may include any of the following or other similar messages:
  1. 01200016 Headboard 38V Error
  2. A-UV-L6 Left UV Shutter Home Position Unknown
  3. A-UV-R5 Right UV Shutter Home Position Unknown
  4. A-IS-330 Ink System Disabled Black: Room temp is out of range for operation.
  5. A-IS-331 Ink System Disabled Cyan: Room temp is out of range for operation.
  6. A-IS-332 Ink System Disabled Magenta: Room temp is out of range for operation.
  7. A-IS-333 Ink System Disabled Yellow: Room temp is out of range for operation.
  8. A-IS-334 Ink System Disabled Lt. Cyan: Room temp is out of range for operation.
  9. A-IS-335 Ink System Disabled Lt. Magenta: Room temp is out of range for operation.

Solution

The simultaneous or concurrent appearance of multiple error messages for different components, but all components that are found on the carriage assembly, may indicate that the power cable between the carriage headboard and the main I/O board in the electronics assembly is failing. This cable carries different voltages (5VDC, 12VDC, 24VDC, and 38VDC) to the headboard to power the different components. As this cable is subject to repeated flexing in the track during printer operation, over time the cable will wear out and begin to fail. As breaks occur in the wires, and/or as the external insulation becomes old and brittle, the voltages will no longer be transmitted to the components on the carriage, leading to various error codes.
To investigate the track cable, it is necessary to remove the printer's external covers to gain access and visibility. The enclosures are held in place by #2 Phillips-head screws. Be sure to power down the printer before beginning any enclosure removal.

Even with the switch turned off, power may still be supplied to components inside the printer's electronics assembly.
The power cable is the wide, flat, red and black cable in the track. It connects to the headboard and the electronics via a 20-pin Molex connector (see Figure 1). Inspect the length of the cable from the headboard down to the electronics, looking for any signs of physical wear in the insulation. If any cracks or open areas in the insulation are found, the cable should be replaced.

If there are no outward signs that the cable is worn, a test using a voltage meter may help determine if power is being transmitted through the cable.
  1. Power on the printer and allow it to initialize. Clear or proceed through any error messages that may appear during startup. Note: with the enclosures removed, there are no safety features to prevent accidental contact with moving parts and exposure to UV light. Do not turn on the UV lamps or do anything on the control panel that will cause the carriage to move.
  2. Set a voltage meter to measure between 5VDC and 38VDC.
  3. Leaving the cable connector attached to the headboard, insert one probe into the back (outward-facing) Molex connector at any black wire location. Alternatively, touch the probe to any bare metal surface or fastener on the printer chassis. Many components are anodized and therefore are not conductive, so be sure to select uncoated metal that provides a ground path. Using a bare-metal ground path rather than attempting to use the cable itself may be necessary if the cable is in fact compromised.
  4. Insert the other probe into each of the red wire locations on the connector. (Note: four locations in the headboard connector are unpopulated.) At each location, the meter should detect a voltage of either 5, 12, 24, or 38 volts. If no voltage is detected at any one of the red wires, it may indicate that there is an internal break in the cable. Continue with the rest of the test procedure.
  5. Remove both probes from the headboard connector and follow the cable down to where it attaches to the I/O board, on the printer's electronics assembly.
  6. Using the same technique as in step 3 and 4, insert one probe into any black wire location on the I/O Molex, and touch the other probe to each red wire location. The same voltages should register on this end as on the headboard end.
    • If voltages were not found on the headboard but were found at the I/O board, it indicates the track power cable has an internal wire break and must be replaced. A replacement cable may be obtained via HP spare part:
    • If voltages were not found at both the headboard and the I/O board, it indicates that the I/O board is faulty by failing to provide current at this connector. The printer power supplies generally are not suspected as they provide power to multiple parts of the printer, not only the headboard. If a power supply were faulty, most likely there would be messages regarding other components not located on the carriage.
    • If voltages are found at both locations and the error messages are of the variety:
      • 01200015 Headboard 24V Error: Headboard 24V power not sensed
      • 01200016 Headboard 38V Error: Headboard 38V power not sensed
      Then it indicates that the voltage-detection circuits on the I/O board are not working, and the I/O board must be replaced. A replacement I/O board may be obtained via HP spare part.
