HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the 3.5-inch Hard Drive for External Drive Bays

Remove the access panel. Click here to view how to remove the access panel.

Disconnect the power and data cables from the drive.

Pull out on the release latch and slide the drive carrier out of the bay.
note:
In a desktop configuration, push in on the drive lock to release the drive. -
Squeeze the drive rail handles and pull the drive out of the chassis.

Flex the drive rail on one side until the aligning pins clear the drive screw holes and then separate the drive and drive rail.
3.5-inch hard drive for external bays replacement

With the drive rail handles toward the rear of the drive, insert the aligning pins into the screw holes on one side of the drive.

Flex the drive rail and insert the aligning pins into the screw holes on the other side of the drive.

Slide the drive into the bay until it locks in place.

Push the drive carrier into the drive bay until it locks in place.

Connect the data and power cables to the hard disk drive.
