This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the 3.5-inch hard drive for external bays for the HP Z420 Workstation.

Minimum skill level

The end user should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the 3.5-inch hard drive for external bays that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

On the new window, select 3.5-inch hard drive for external bays from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.

caution:

Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
Remove the access panel. Click here to view how to remove the access panel.
Disconnect the power and data cables from the drive.
Pull out on the release latch and slide the drive carrier out of the bay.

note:

In a desktop configuration, push in on the drive lock to release the drive.
Squeeze the drive rail handles and pull the drive out of the chassis.
Flex the drive rail on one side until the aligning pins clear the drive screw holes and then separate the drive and drive rail.

3.5-inch hard drive for external bays replacement

With the drive rail handles toward the rear of the drive, insert the aligning pins into the screw holes on one side of the drive.
Flex the drive rail and insert the aligning pins into the screw holes on the other side of the drive.
Slide the drive into the bay until it locks in place.
Push the drive carrier into the drive bay until it locks in place.
Connect the data and power cables to the hard disk drive.
