The end-of-life determination was based on a variety of factors, including the amount of toner that had been used from a particular cartridge, and was derived from HP’s utilization of industry standard testing procedures on the print cartridge for the relevant model. When end-of–life was reached on these cartridges, a user was required to replace the relevant print cartridge in order to continue printing. Printing stopped in these models, among other reasons, to help ensure the highest print quality for HP’s customers (i.e., to avoid streaky, faded or poor quality prints) and to avoid the waste of other supplies that could result from continued printing. Nevertheless, it is possible that additional toner could have remained in an individual print cartridge when end-of-life was reached.
In later CLJ printer models and their corresponding print cartridges, HP utilized technology that allowed (but did not require) users to "override" the termination of printing described above. HP disclosed that "override" and included instructions for its use in the applicable User Guides. That "override" allows users to continue to print as long as they choose with the following CLJ printer models and their corresponding print cartridges:

In the 2017 600-series CLJ printer models and their corresponding print cartridges, HP utilized technology that changed the cartridge end-of-life behavior.
On these new devices, when a cartridge reaches end-of-life, the end-user is still alerted with a “Very Low” message, but the printer will continue printing without any user intervention. The new “continuous print” allows users to continue to print as long as they choose with the following CLJ printer models and their corresponding print cartridges:
