HP Photosmart D7100, D7200, D7300, and D7400 Printer Series and Photosmart All-in-One Series - Ink Smears or Is Sticky on Printed Photo

Issue

The ink smears, feels sticky, photos stick or does not print as expected after printing on non-HP paper from a memory card.
There might also be following occurences.
  • Printed photos are blurry.
  • Photos might have tiny spots instead of true color.
note:
HP recommends the use of genuine HP media. HP media and ink are designed to work together for best results.

Solution

Step one: Increase the dry time

  1. When the product is ready to print, on the File menu, click Print.
  2. Depending on the driver version, click Properties, or click Settings, or click Preferences
    • Follow these steps to increase the dry time using Properties or Settings.
      1. Click the Advanced tab.
      2. In the Extra Dry Time pane, move the slider toward More.
    • Follow these steps to increase the dry time using Preferences.
      1. Click the Basics tab.
      2. Click Advanced Features.
      3. In the Extra Dry Time pane, move the slider toward More.
  3. Try the print job again. If the photo is still blurry, repeat the same procedure to increase the dry time.

Step two: Set Paper Type Manually

Follow these steps to manually select the paper type, when printing directly from the memory card.
  1. On the File menu, click Print.
  2. Depending on the driver version, click Properties, or click Settings, or click Preferences.
  3. Select the correct paper size from the Paper Size drop-down list.
  4. Select the pictures to be printed and click Done.
  5. Click Settings.
  6. Click Paper Type to select the correct paper type.
    note:
    Note that Automatic paper type might not yield optimal results when printing with non-bar-coded photos.
  7. Click Done. The product is ready to print.

Print photos using HP Photosmart Essential Software

Follow these steps to manually print the photos from the computer using HP Photosmart Essential Software.
note:
This workaround does not apply when the product is used as a standalone. Make sure that the product is connected to the computer with all the print drivers installed.
  1. Depending on the operating system, use one of the options to open HP Photosmart Essential.
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click Programs or All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Phtosmart Essential 2.5.
    • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), click Programs, click HP, and then click HP Photosmart Essential 2.5.

  2. Click Add to Library.
  3. Browse the memory card for photos.
  4. Select the photo to be printed from the memory card.
  5. Click Print.

  6. Select any one of the following procedure to print the photo.
    • Click Simple Print to print the photos in a single size.

    • Click Photo Template to customize photo frames.
      1. Click Paper Type to select photo paper as the paper type.
      2. Click OK.
      3. Click Done.

Cause

The default photo paper type is used when using Automatically Detect for these Photosmart product models. A few non-HP media types might be improperly detected by the product.
