HP Photosmart B8550, B8553, and B8558 Printers - Replacing Ink Cartridges

Introduction
This document provides the steps to replace an ink cartridge in the product.
Replacing Ink Cartridges
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
Step two: Open the product
  note:
This video is provided as a supplement to the instructions in this document. For best quality on dial-up connections, wait until the video has fully loaded before viewing.
  1. Make sure that the printer is on. Press the Power button if it is not lit.
  2. Raise the ink cartridge access door.

  3. Wait until the carriage stops moving. Press the tab on the front of the ink cartridge and remove the cartridge from the slot.

    • If replacing the black ink cartridge, push the tab of the ink cartridge on the far right.
    • If replacing one of the other ink cartridges, such as photo black, magenta, cyan, or yellow, push the tab on the appropriate ink cartridge to remove it.
Step three: Prepare the new ink cartridge
  1. Remove the plastic wrap from the new ink cartridge by pulling the orange pull-tab straight back.
      note:
    Remove the plastic wrap from the ink cartridge before installing it in the product or printing will fail.

  2. Twist the orange cap to snap it off.
      note:
    A forceful twist might be necessary to remove the orange cap.

Step four: Replace the ink cartridge
  1. Slide the new ink cartridge into its matching slot and then press down firmly until it snaps into place.

      caution:
    Do not lift the latch handle on the carriage when installing the ink cartridges. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated ink cartridges and printing issues. The latch must remain down in order to install the ink cartridges correctly.

    Repeat steps two through four for each ink cartridge to be replaced.
  2. Close the ink cartridge access door.

Step five: Align the printheads
After replacing one or more ink cartridges, align the printer using one of the following methods.
Align the printhead from the product control panel
  1. Press Setup ().
  2. Press the down arrow button to highlight Tools and then press OK.
  3. Press the down arrow button to highlight Align Printhead and then press OK. The product aligns the printhead.
  4. Press any button to return to the Tools menu.
Align the printer from the HP Photosmart software
  1. Load paper into the main input tray.
  2. Right-click the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the Windows system tray and click Launch/Show HP Solution Center.
  3. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings.
  4. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox. The printer toolbox appears.
  5. Click the Device Services tab.
  6. Click Align the Printer. The product prints a test page, aligns the printhead, and calibrates the printer.
