Advisory: HP Compaq Business Desktops - Processor Microcode Update Required To Prevent Possible Unpredictable System Behavior With Some Intel Processors

DESCRIPTION
Systems described in the "Scope" may exhibit any of the following symptoms as a consequence of improper Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) invalidation:
  • Systems may stop responding to keyboard or mouse input.
  • Systems operating in Microsoft Windows environments may hang, displaying a blue screen error message.
  • Systems operating in Linux environments may hang, displaying a Kernel panic message.
  • Incorrect data.
This issue was identified in a test environment during rigorous quality control testing. To date, HP has not observed this issue in a production environment but the possibility cannot be ruled out entirely.
CAUTION
Intel has provided HP with updated processor microcode that addresses the improper TLB invalidation issue. HP strongly recommends applying the microcode update as early as possible.
Intel has documented the issue in a specification update for the affected desktop system processors. This information is available via the Intel Web site and can be accessed as follows:
  1. Browse to .
  2. Scroll to the Specification updates section.
  3. Under the Desktop heading click the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor E2000 Sequence Specification Update link.
  4. Under the Download From heading, click the FTP Server link to download or the Web Server link to open in your browser.
  5. Scroll to the Specification Clarifications section.

SCOPE
The issue is not specific to HP Business PC desktop systems and affects specific Intel processors used in various notebook, desktop, workstation, and server products from many computer manufacturers, including HP. However, information in the "Scope" and "Resolution" sections of this document is only applicable to affected HP Business PC desktop systems.
Information in this document applies to the listed HP Business PC desktop systems having any of the indicated processors and BIOS versions.
Intel® vPro™ technology (vPro) Systems:
  • HP Compaq dc7700p/dc7700, BIOS versions prior to Version 2.10
NOTE
vPro enabled systems can be identified by either of the following:
  • vPro systems have the Intel® vPro™ logo on the front bezel.
  • vPro systems will have an AMT option available in MEBx setup utility, non-vPro systems will not.
Non-vPro Systems:
  • HP Compaq dc5700, BIOS versions prior to Version 2.04
  • HP Compaq dc7700, BIOS versions prior to Version 1.10
  • HP Compaq dx7300, BIOS versions prior to Version 1.10
  • HP Compaq dx2300, BIOS versions prior to Version 1.07
  • HP Compaq dx2700, BIOS versions prior to Version 1.09
  • HP Compaq dx7380, BIOS versions prior to Version 1.06
  • HP rp5700 Desktop PC, BIOS versions prior to Version 1.02

RESOLUTION
HP has prepared SoftPaqs containing updated BIOS versions that incorporate the latest processor microcode from Intel. For some systems, the Intel microcode update is available separately. The microcode update, whether applied separately or with a BIOS update, eliminates the issue detailed in the "Description" without impacting system performance or power management functionality.
CAUTION
HP strongly recommends immediate application of the Intel processor microcode update to eliminate the possibility of encountering the issue detailed in the "Description."
Download the appropriate SoftPaqs indicated below. Please read the instructions and release notes carefully before executing.
NOTE
To download SoftPaqs:
  1. Click the appropriate Business Desktop PC model.
  2. Click the Download drivers and software link.
  3. Click the link for the appropriate operating system.
  4. Click the BIOS link.
  5. Click the link for the latest BIOS version.
  6. Read the instructions and release notes carefully before proceeding.
  7. Click the Download button to download the SoftPaq.
Although these instructions require selecting individual models and operating systems, the SoftPaqs are the same for some of the systems and operating system has no bearing. If the indicated version and BIOS (ie; 786E1) are the same, then the same SoftPaq can be used.
The SoftPaq/software is subject to change without notice. If, following the instructions above, you find a later version than the one indicated in this document, HP recommends using that later version instead.

  • BIOS Version 2.10 or later (has updated microcode): HP Compaq dc7700p Business Desktop System BIOS for Intel vPro Technology (786E1 BIOS)
  • Microcode only, Version 1.03 or later (not needed if updating BIOS): 786E BIOS Family Intel Processor Microcode Update
Non-vPro Systems
dc5700 (all form factors):
  • BIOS Version 2.04 or later (has updated microcode): HP Compaq Business Desktop System BIOS (786E2 BIOS)
  • Microcode only, Version 1.03 or later (not needed if updating BIOS): 786E BIOS Family Intel Processor Microcode Update
